if it's not needed, then how would you answer this question?

well, first, what you're looking for (as suggested by Dave_Sinkula's link) is a boolean data type.

second, the ++ has nothing to do with boolean data types. Third, || means "OR".

Boolean logic has a pretty wide scope sometimes, so for now I suggest you start reading around... Here's a good place to get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_logic
