/sigh, I hate posting these "I'm new threads" but I guess i better do so because I have a feeling im going to post here for a while.

Anyway, I'm 16 and I'm just starting to learn C++, I got into programing because (this is going to be a shocker) I found out I could get the computer to do my homework for me. (What? Expecting "to make my own games" a reason?) I found out with my TI83 calculator that I could program it to save me precious time on my algebra and physics homework. (Both teachers allow me to use these programs for homework yet clear mem for tests so its legal) Starting from this I got into trying to learn C++ because I wanted something a bit more powerfull. Anyway, none of that information really matters but I thought I should have shared it with you guys anyway.

I have been on the tutorial for 5 days now and I still don't quite understand some concepts like classes and arrays. After doing the challenges I still dont understand how to use it in coding. Is there another good tutorial with good examples and "projects" for learning? Please don't tell me to get a book, I'm preaty cheep and the only book I have on C++ is one from like the late 80s called OOP in C++ by David Hu. It mostly deals with why C++ is better than smalltalk and is REALLY outdated. (My school's tech department was giving away old computer parts and old computer books when the updated thier systems so thats how I got it)

So anyway, if you guys can give me some advice or other tutorials that would be nice. Thank you :-)

Cheap? How does free sound. Libraries are a wonderful thing.
Free membership and free books…as many as you can read. They do not have a book you want? Request it!

No car? Well there's bicycling, walking, cross-country skiing, take your pick. I managed to do it. Google's even easier. You can even get e-books! 5 days is a little quick to be expecting to understand OOP concepts anyway.

Well, ive been studying about 3 hours a day on C++ (even more on the weekends) My parents would freak out even more if i tried to walk/bicycle to the libary. I forgot about e-books though.....

WTF? They do not want you to learn a skill that can get you a job making good money? Have a future?

I would look up your library system online (they more than likely have access to it online), search for C++, find some that look like good starter books, search for reviews or ask on here. Then go steal $5 from your idiot parents and pay somebody at school to go get you the book you want.

Maybe they fear he wants to be a hacker , or that he is spending too much time in one area and his grades will suffer elsewhere? The latter describes my dad. Since he is the job interviewer for his group he always is lecturing me on the importance of good grades and a nice college

They are very computer illiterate, they thing I will crash the computer or something. That reminds me of a funny story: When my dad was out of town I had some extra money and I was at the mall with one my friends (which im kinda dating right now) and we went to this bookstore. There was this linux book, calling me....tempting me.....with the fedora core distro......

That night I decided to set up a duel boot system on my compy (which has like 80GB of free space) to run linux and windows and guess who walks in the moment I start partitioning......
Luckily I only got scoulded because he thought I could have destroyed my entire HD.....

Actually, can't blame them really. When I was a wee little boy I used to like playing around with DOS since most of my games ran on it back in the day. You can imagine what could happen if an eight year old kid was in DOS for long enough.

Good grades? That is nice, and a good thing to shoot for. Understanding and knowledge is important (ok, I have said my good little cliché for the kiddies) But when you apply for a job they do not go get your transcript. You can have a C- in every class and still get a bachelors degree, and that is all they will know; That you met the minimum requirements to get a bachelors degree. It would be stupid for them to assume anymore than that.

And as far as a good school. Yes, that can have a big effect. But 99% of things, when it is just bachelor’s degree level school does not matter. The basics are universal, and that is all a bachelors is; Learning the basics and a spring board to a more reputable school if you choose to go further.
