q: is there a way that we can view the shell32.dll and modify/rename those icons?

I wanted to replace the default c: Hard Drive Icon with a better icon for example.

Yes. Use something like ResHacker to open up Shell32.dll and replace the drive icon with your own...Although it will probably take a while to find what you're looking for. I just opened it up myself and there's a LOT of images and icons in that one file.

The easiest way to view 'em:

    Right-click on any shortcut
    [Properties]
    [Change Icon]
    [Browse]
    to Shell32.dll

For a shortcut, you can also use an icon from any exe file. (EXE files have their icons embedded in the exe file itself.)
