    How widely used is it in the gaming industry?

    OpenGL and DirectX are probably the most widely used, not sure about Allegro and other libraries

    Doom3 uses opengl for graphics rendering as a recent example.

    Wonderful, it's nice to know I'm learning something worthwile... I created my first 3d polygons last night!

    excellent! I know how great these small victories can be. If you have more questions about opengl i suggest you post in the Game Development forum (even if its not game related). graphics questions tend to get more attention there.
