What is the difference between Visual C++ standard the other versions?

And which would be the best in the long run to buy?

The main differences are that the standard edition doesn't optimise, doesn't alow you to profile your code and doesn't provide static linkage to the MFC library (there are workarounds for this).

If you just want something to learn with, then you should get the Standard edition, otherwise get what you can afford.
