    Talking Just bought Deitel's book.

Just a question for someone else who has his book.

The cd that came with the book contains VC++ 6. I already have that installed on my computer, will I have to install whats on the disk? Or can I just use what I already have?

I havenīt read the book but I can answer your question. The only thing that you need is a c++ compiler (I guess that you have the c++ deitel book).

How much was the book? What store did you get it at? I'd buy it just for VC++ 6 !

The book was EXPENSIVE. I spent $92.01 on it. It a prentice hall book. Used in colleges.....all I can say it that I hope I use it in a future college class.
I bought it at Barnes and Nobles. Look around for a cheaper price!! I drove 58 miles to spend almost $100 on a book....shesh!

For Visual C++ 6? And you are complaining that it cost almost $100? MSVC++ 6 alone off the market is usually allot more than that. Thats the best deal I have heard of.

I remember getting a "Standard" Edition of VC++ 6.0 when I started for $50. I think it was exactly the same as the Professional version except that my applications would only work on my computer. To be able to distribute applications, I had to upgrade to the Professional version.

If you click on amazon's used books link for that book, they are selling them brand new for $50--including a sealed cd.

Before I just thought that all knowledge was free. But now I see that as being untrue. It is the quality of knowledge that matters. General knowledge is free but better quality knowledge costs

I have the book as well and if you don't care about the Visual C++ 6.0 Introductory Edition the the book is expensive. I could do w/o the case study in the book, rather I would spend my money on a book covering UML.

There are extensive problems at the end of each chapter through which I pick and choose which ones to do. If you do them all it will really help your coding skills I imagine, but the time to complete the book will probably be ten fold.

I have also read C++ Primer Plus and think the approach and writing style to be better imo.

Still I am plugging away at the Deitel & Deitel book and am having fun while doing it.

I like the Wrox books. I'm reading Beginning ATL COM Programming as of now and I love the way they teach the books.
