Graphics in a window in windows

If I were to create a game that used graphics in a program that ran in a regular window, what type of graphics could I use? Also, what type of project would I need if I used vs.net pro?

I could be wrong as I am just now jumping on the win32 bandwagon and starting. But you'd just create a new windows app. may be win32 app, don't know i'm at work right now. But to my knowledge the two major graphics lang. are direct x and opengl.
