    Lightbulb Non-Blocking IO

I am having trouble finding a way optionaly input data, and if no data is input by a specified time, for the program to move on. I found another aticle on this message board with the same problem, but the code didn't work on my RedHat g++ compiler. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
