(converting ascii files to....readable form) && (.dat files) *please try to help me!

for school, im in a keyboarding class. now, i want to modify a file to make it seem like i did some of these lessons.

one of the keyboarding programs we use runs in dos, ascii i think. in the program, there are little asterisks next to the lessons you have completed. now, there is this file called 'KBBOOK.dat',(opens in notepad) and I know it is written to by the dos program, because if i open it, it is all giberish except for the sentences that i remember typing in the lessons.

I think this is the 'save' file that i could modify to be able to make it appear as if i have completed the lessons. the only problem is, its almost all giberish.

is it in ascii and i need to convert it or something? what do i need to do to it to be able to understand it? i attached the file below, i made a new one, but a .txt file so i could attach it. (here at school we cant make zip files):
    Attached Files Attached Files

Are you asking for help to cheat your way out of doing some schoolwork?

Do a lesson, copy the file to a different location.
Do another lesson, copy the file to another location.

Open the files in a hex editor and compare them.
