    Unhappy lots of pain.....

i just turned my computer on yesterday and got fatal error "blue" windows next thing i know "No operating system", next thing i can't even access the hard drive, no file allocation table, no system.ini...... the extremely ironic aspect is that all the programs and a source code for a certain application i was working on for couple month already , all gone........... ohhh it hurts......and unfortunatelly no back up made prior...

what i am thinking is that it must a been a virus, but from where??? the only thing i download is source code from this page ..

anyway i am beat..........now i am just wondering if there's a way of finding out if there's any data left on it... i think i tried everything already.........

the worst part is that there isn't any partiotions on this drive which leads me to believe that everything is gone.....

anyway..........just a little different topic than c++ today...

any hopeless sugestions, my fellow programmers????

There is a company in California (can't remember the name off
hand but I can get it when I get to the office on Monday). They
recovered the data off of one of our harddrives that died but it
cost big time. We paid around $4,500 (US) for a 20GB laptop HD
    recovery.

    howdy,
i recovered data from an old Seagate drive that did pretty much the same thing, i installed it on another box and accessed it using Norton Utilities and performed a sector by sector read, they say you have less than 10% chance of this working.
that said be damn careful if you even suspect that it is a virus.

not to add insult to injury for the last 20 years i've heard "Back up now, Back up later, then Back up often"

i did similar, i installed it on a different machine but, i simply tried to have something show me that threre's any data on it, however i didn't succeed... i was just wondering if there's a way of creating FAT (table) on a drive so it can even be accessed, without formating, i was just looking at windows utilities and found "Disk Converter (FAT 32)" maybe that could accomplish anything....for today i am beat......

    this sucks........

actually the most ironic thing is that the very same day a thought poped into my head ---> "why don't i back up my stuff, especially projects that i 've been working on for 6 months"??

and the same day this **** happens..........

    ehhhh

    howdy,
just a thought, when i installed RH 7.2 on this box the RH installation utility had a very cool disk partition utility included on it, it looked to me like you could set the boot loader to create any kind of partition on any disk and as i remember it it said you could do it without losing any data, this would work as long as there is another valid partition on the HDD. you might give it a try.

itld reaches for his back up disk and inserts it into the CDRW.
