I'm a rookie! I don't know what a function is, but I've heard of classes so I'm sure I can write the next Quake engine.

you must know what a polygon is before venturing into the world of 3d space. despite what you hear, it's actually a painful and long, arduous process to learn. unless you want to make an 'imagination' 3d engine, but i suspect that you have ventured far beyond that realm of imagination. but rest assured, polygons can be figured out.
what is a polymer? it is a string of molecules which connect to each other using strong and weak nuclear forces.
what is a hexagon? it's a structure built by african killer bees to store honey and lay their eggs in. however, you won't get a clear picture of a hexagon without actually breaking apart a nest and investigating them. relax. the stingers' toxins will wear off after a while.
so in conclusion, a polygon is a combination of the two. how can bees and nuclear forces be related? good question. scientists are still figuring that out. but rest assured, you won't need to know that to gain the basic understanding you need to know of polygons. however, some insight into the issue of bee eggs and molecules is absolutely necessary.
after a few years you will be knowledgeable enough to finally discover what a polygon is. but it won't stop there: the circle is far more difficult, and far more widely used in imagination 3d graphics engines. i will only tell you that a experiences in plus a few years study of circumcisions and popsicles will aid your knowledge in that region.
godspeed, and soon you'll be creating that quake engine in no time!

Rephrased to mean the exact same thing:

ok.......was that a nerdy joke because I didn't get it, because I'm not a nerd and you are.
Nerd also Nurd - Pronunciation Key (nûrd)

A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
So, what makes you think you're any 'cooler' than anyone else here?

Im writing a text adventure in a 3d engine...absolutley insane It allows for some cool stuff though. If anyone, who knows a bit more than the first couple posters, wants to trade idea's on text adventure engines, drop me a line: [email protected] (Or if your interested in the backwards notion of a text adventure being written with Direct3D

i'm making fun of people who write 3d engines without knowing what polygons are. the post is filled with technobabble, bee info, and circumscisions to show how "complex" polygons really are.

polygon -- a shape with many sides

or you can read my above post and try to make sense of it

More of a breakdown of the word "polygon":

poly - means many

gon - means sides

hexagon, octagon, decagon.......hexagon means 5 (or 6) sides, octagon means 8 (eight) sides, decagon means 10 (ten) sides.

If this was directed at me...I know you where My exclusion was directed at the very first two posts...the standard, we just learned programming, or kinda know how, and want to make a club of programmers crew. That stuff's great...but isn't usually full of the people I'd be interested in sharing ideas with.

P.S.

Everyone's alwasy talking about polygons...like its the basic primitive of 3D...well, more specificaly, the triangle is So if you know what a triangle is...and Im sure you all do...then your way ahead of all the other polygons. Which means that a quake engine is well within your grasp already. But I'd skip quake entirley if I where you...the Unreal 2 engine looks pretty nice...if your going to start big, take your knowledge of the mighty triangle and build an unreal 2 engine.
