    is a linked list where you declare, in a struct, a pointer to that struct, so you can access all the variables of that type?

    It's true that the struct or class is self referencing. The reason has more to do with the way structs can be strung together in a chain. Some of the advantages of linked lists include efficent splicing, inserting and deleting of elements or sections of elements.
