    the "[]" operator

In C, does this operator simply do the following:

(memory location of Var) + (words or bytes per value)

    ?

So, assuming a byte-addressed system where an int is a word (24 bits) long, a[12] would yield the int stored at the address of 'a' added to 12 (the index) times 4 (number of bytes in a word)?
