If you've only "read books" then the first thing would be to make sure you can answer all the exercises in the books.

Then you could take a shot at working out answers to the questions people post here (just to see if you can).
If you can successfully explain something to another person, then you can say that you actually understand the subject.

Or maybe googling for "programming contests" where the problems are more involved.

When you really know your stuff, how about joining one of the many open source development projects?
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Another place to look for suggestions is, again, this forum. In the Projects and Recruitment Board, there have been several threads where people just ask for ideas of projects they can work on. Now, as a newbie to C++, many of the suggestions maybe a little advanced for you (but not much), but that's just another place you can look once you're a little more confident.

Now, I don't know if you're looking for something productive, or just for a challenge, but here are a couple programs that I found fulfilling to complete. The first one is a homework assignment I had to do over the past semester. You can find the outline here :

    http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~dudek/206/asst3b_05_206.html

The other program I enjoyed doing after I first learned C (by then I just knew the basic stuff, and was by no means a master of anything) was creating a Hangman game. It was fun because I kept adding new features to it everytime I learned something new, and from there it sort of just grew on its own.

    Anyways, hope that helps.

This site has a lot of programming challenges. Some of them are kind of fun:

If you understand what you're doing, you're not learning anything.
