You use an editor to write your program
    Code:
    edit prog.c
You use a compiler to compile your program into something you can run
    Code:
    cc prog.c
You then run your program and see what happens
    Code:
    prog.exe
When it all goes wrong, you need a debugger to help you figure out where it went wrong.

    http://www.bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html
Features a text editor, compiler and debugger all in the same package.
Despite the C++ in the name, it also does C.

Consider something like this. You may not want to spend the money, but if you plan on using the IDE, you may as well learn how to use it.
