    Thanks for the help

Thanks everyone for your help. Sharke, thanks for your suggestion. It helped me understand the sequencing of the guitar better. One more question for everyone if they have experience. I am using a Macbook with Xcode to write and compile my project. Can you suggest any helpful tips for a newbie? There is so much new stuff.

I don't use Mac, but I am of the belief that IDE's (such as Xcode apparently is) are not helpful for beginners (as you say, "There is so much new stuff!"). Programming does not require this. You should try a simple text editor with C syntax highlighting and just manually compile and test things with the command-line. You will probably also learn more about "the basics" of your computer and computer programming that way.

Here's an analogy: no doubt a nice rack of fx pedals is a great thing, but no one would think it wise to buy that, and your first guitar, at the same time.
    C programming resources:
GNU C Function and Macro Index -- glibc reference manual
The C Book -- nice online learner guide
    Current ISO draft standard
CCAN -- new CPAN like open source library repository
    3 (different) GNU debugger tutorials: #1 -- #2 -- #3
cpwiki -- our wiki on sourceforge
