    Game of Life... Turned my life to HELL!

    As you can read from the title I am having trouble writing Conway's Game of Life... actually this is not entirely true. I can write it as so;

    I'm not sure what you're really having a problem with here. NW is -1,-1. SE is +1,+1. If you really need "north northwest", then NNW is -1,-2, assuming you count columns before rows.
