Writable File shows in directory but can't be accessed

I created a writable ASCII file, opened it and wrote data to it. In the directory list, the file is listed, but when I try to access it, I am informed that it does not exist. Other files created and written to in exactly the same manner work fine.
There are 3 other files open at the same time -- am I exceeding the number of files that can be open? Any thoughts?

you probably aren't exceeding the limit of open files. how do you know the error is that the file doesn't exist? is that what perror says?
