    aghh win 98

why did i ever try and network win98 machines - win98 is scum and i hate it!

what should have been a 30 minute job took more than two hours because windows kept refusing to find the card.

still my hub appears to be working and so do the cards, however every now and again windows just crashes while im browsing the other machine - any ideas why anyone?

Actually, after reading some super secret documents from MS, I have learned that WIN Crashing is the equivilant of preventative maintenance on automobiles.

So the next time your WIN machine crashes, think of it as getting your oil changed and rotating your tires

So every how many miles/month do you need to give your computer a tune up? Weekly or even more every two days? Or daily in case of WIN ME (results not typical )........now if you get XP you get some peace of mind.

the cards have all been installed with the correct drivers and protocols, according to the transmit leds on the back of the ethernet cards they are transmitting. According to the status lights on the hub they are linked and active - widows can see the machines after a few minutes.

if i try and move files it crashes, if i try and browse the other machine it crashes

all file sharing and permissions are set correctly - what is going wrong!

I think you right click on network neighbourhood and select properties, then you select TCP/IP and click properties. Turn "automatically get IP" off, and set the IPs on each machine to 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 ... etc. and set the default gateway on all of them to 192.168.0.1. Always works for me.

right, i have already setup the ip addresses but i will try changine the default gateway to the first machine.

this is kind of my last hope, as soon as i start browsing the remote machine the os crashes which in turn crashes the network so i have to reboot the machines and reset the hub.

    ill try that

Networking for me is just trial and error. It's impossible to tame/secure/use safely a windows network.

BTW - use win2k, with all the patches and service packs, it's almost exactly like windows 98, just better (but autoexec.bat doesn't run which makes djgpp a pain).
