    patriotism in one's country.

personally i'm for globalism, without the sacrifice of diversity. but wouldn't you think that patriotism in one's country [which, in effect, is in contrast to that of other countries] would be detrimental to this? seeing as how you are favoring from a border? i might think so, and i'd just about the only thing we can share is warmth and peace. without the sacrifice of diversity. I'm in favor of supporting your own country, after all I don't see why I should have to pay for border jumpers to live a good life.

Edge, no offense, but what you said isn't exactly correct. If one lives in a prosperous nation, one definately wants other nations to become wealthy as well. This increases the market in which the wealthy nation can sell its goods. Also, if a nation is prosperous, it is harder for a madman, ala Hitler, to take control because no one changes what is already successful. However, it is difficult for wealthy nations to understand this.

Examples: Europe after WWII and the Marshall Plan
    Japan after WWII
    many, many more...

P.S. I am from a very wealthy nation(US) and wish everyone knew this!!!!!

I think edge is talking about the illegal immigrants, who come into america, don't pay taxes, and then use taxpayers money for the goverment's "undocumented immagrants" health plans
if a contradiction was contradicted would that contradition contradict the origional crontradiction?

I hear what your saying. I like the idea that we should all be able to get along without all the bickering and wars.

However, i dont like glbalisation. No one race has the perfect society. The Uk has football thugs, the US has Guns, China has always kept its self to itself (more or less) and the French have..... well, each other

Diversity is a good thing. It makes life interesting.... the different cultures, the many ways of doing things.....

I think the real problem (and i could be wrong in this) is Patriotism. We are all proud of our countries.... and think everyone else should be like us. We all have our histories.

We have this problem in europe at the moment..... personally, i like europe... many people dont. It eould be great to be more like the Aussies..... and just be chilled n groovey!

what makes up a good life? freedom is pretty much free(one of the reasons we've been sucessful). it doesn't cost much to let people in rather than pay people to keep them out.
if you mean money-wise, then the amount is not much. i wouldn't consider an immigrant's life to be prosperous. our country taxes the rich more because they can afford it. we don't want a permanently poor class of people. its like communism.
diversity is a good thing imho, because it makes life interesting, if nothing else. i think globalization will help more than hurt that.

People tend to be at their best when they band together with other people, but in opposition to other groups. This is, evolutionarily, the best practice. Being in a group grants every member better chances of survival, but as each person's goal in evolution is to be better than average at survival/reproduction, to be better than average, you try to make others worse than average.

War, in some form, will always exist (and must exist, as a force of renewal). The wars of the future may be economic, rather than military, but they will be as devastating, and will serve to keep the world in a state of dynamic renewal.

I doubt global government will happen until people start colonizing other planets; in such a scenario, I think planetwide governments will exist, and exist in opposition to each other.

    howdy,
patriotism comes pretty easy after "the other guys" shot at you and drop bombs on you and try to basically do every kind of uncomfortable thing they can think of to you.
im all for live and let live. im clever enough to hold my own in an open market. but how in the world can you guarantee me and any other soldier that the guy in the car next to him today isnt the guy that shot him in 68?
in other words in proud to be an american about 99% of the time the other 1% im just glad to be an american. I respect people from other countries that feel the same way about thier country and have little respect for those that find it hard to support thier own people.

I think patriotism isnt such a good thing, it clouds peoples judgement. Im an american, and Im not sure I support Bush's policy toward Afghanistan and this so-called 'war on terrorism'. I just dont have enough info to make an educated decision (hopefully they do). But what irks me is everyone giving unwavering support to Bush just because we were in a time of war and calling someone who speaks out against Bush or their established and one-sided idea of the situation as unpatriotic (as if that was a bad thing).

In my (freshmen) gov't class, right after 9-11, the professor was talking about Afghanistan and what we should do in response and one guy said "we should hang them from the highest tree" (most responses were of this sort), and when someone would speak about what we have done to cause them to act in this manner his ideas would be immediately dismissed. The majority of the class didnt want to even entertain the idea that we may be partly (mostly?) to blame for the attack.

What all of us need to realize is that people will wage war when they are discontent with their situation. Until all of us are happy, this planet will always be in (or inbetween) a state of chaos. I look forward to the day when we will all share the resources of our planet with each oher so that we all can live in peace and harmony. If diversity and other things have to be sacrified to accomplish this (I think its inevitable that diversity to a certain extent will eventually vanish in a global society) then so be it.
