This post is depricated. . .

Now that I have your attention: The word depricated is not in my Webster's New World Dictionary. In fact, as I type this message, Firefox reports to me that I have a misspelled word: depricated. Nice and red under-squiggled, yet under-squiggled is not.

What is the origin of depricated? I see it all throughout the free software community, in fact, this word is even in Linux menuconfig.

Please enlighten me.

It's a misspelling of the word "deprecated" which comes from the word "deprecate". This verb reportedly originated from the Latin verb deprecare.

Deprecated is also a term used in manufacturing. It is normally used in relation to the date or version of the blueprint or perhaps an engineering design change. Of course you could just substitute the world 'old' for it, but deprecated makes you sound somewhat intelligent to other people.

This one word can mean the difference between a good day and a very bad day at work. Say for instance as an auditor you find a defect. You look at the print to confirm this but you make the mistake of not using the most recent print. So you proceed to tell adjusters to fix this defect on every unit in the building. But just as you are thinking what a great employee you are another fellow auditor finds that you were looking at a deprecated print and just had 10 or 20 units altered to meet this deprecated print. This means those 10 to 20 units must now be fixed again to meet the new print thus keeping them from shipping and perhaps even causing them to miss their ship date.

Not a good day for you. I know because I've been there.

Deprecated is indeed a word and I'm surprised Google did not attempt to correct your mistake by suggesting the correct spelling. A dictionary is only as smart as it's user I reckon.

In programming, deprecated means something that is still supported now, but may not be supported in a future release. It usually refers to the C or C++ standard. However, compilers and/or libraries often deprecate things as well. (For example, VC++ caused a big stink by marking many standard library functions as deprecated without making it clear that they were only being deprecated by VC++ and not by the actual standard.)

Another common mis-spelling of deprecated is depreciated, which, unlike depricated, is an actual word and even has a meaning that makes sense in the context. It's still wrong, though.

Are the different spellings like the z/s collisions between the regular English and US-English?

"Regular English", eh? Usually it's termed "British" and "American", at least that's what I hear. Of course, it's "regular" for me, too.

I don't think so. "Depricated" is a simple misspelling, albeit a relatively common one, apparently.

How do we say it? Dep-reh-kated, or dep-ree-kated. It's funny the way people mispronounce words and as a result misspell them.
