    Chances of landing a job...

Hi all. New to the site and the forums, so not positive this is where to post this question...

I graduated college in 1994 with an Associates degree in Computer Science. Most of my experience since then has been in tech support in call centers. I've recently become interested in C++ programming and am trying to learn it on my own. I took a C class in college and some parts are starting to come back to me, so I think I can pick up on it pretty well. My question is, after putting all the work into learning C++, what are the odds that I will be able to get hired as a programmer having only an associates degree and no formal training in C++? Am I wasting my time learning it on my own?

    Thanks for your responses

Since you have an associates, you are a step above the self taught programmers when it comes to looking for a job. In general without a BS you are going to need to work harder to prove yourself in order to get a job.

Really the question you need to ask yourself, is do you want to learn C++ (and other languages if you really want to call yourself a programmer). If you do want to learn the language, you are going to need a more in depth understanding than just hobbyist stuff (unless you are Bubba, then you take your hobby to another level)

So, how bad do you want it, and how much are you willing to put into it?

Well, programming is what I originally wanted to do out of college anyway, but I got into tech support instead. Now I find myself really wanting to follow the programming path, so I'm studying it all I can...not just the technical side, but the design, etc. I'm not really into it as a hobby. I'm learning it with the goal of landing a job in mind. And to answer your question, I want it pretty bad and am willing to put as much as it takes into it to achieve my goal(s)

    Thanks for replying
