    DX9 vs DX10

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player/19967.html

Are the differences really a result of DX10? The major differences
I see are the lighting on the ground (seems to be more shadow
and fire reflections), the addition of rain, and the flames seem
more fluid (and looks to be following wind) in the DX10 clip.
And there's more debris flying around...

But, how much of that is because of DX10? Is it just better
choreographed, or does DX10 make this stuff possible?

Well, I can't see the demo's, but I would say the following:
The difference is probably not DIRECTLY because of DX10, but rather that DX10 allows some things to be done in hardware, which DX9 can't do in hardware[1]. This will lead to faster drawing of certain elements of the frame, which in turn means that they can be done either more precisely (allowing a more precise calculation) or that they can be done quickly, leading to a more smooth/realistic update.

[1] Assuming of course that there is support in the hardware for those features - if you have an old graphics card, it may not have hardware support for those features anyways.

Doesn't look much different to me. However the DX9 version is probably not using floating point render targets and if it is, it is using them sparingly. Support for this on DX10 cards is rampant and the primary buffer will also probably be a floating point render surface.

They are simply trying to 'sell' their Crysis engine and thus game to the public. Of course they are going to try to show that DX10 is worth it. I would be willing to bet that they also have something going with Microsoft in an effort to promote DX10 and perhaps video card manuf. so we will all go out and buy the latest and greatest card.

In the end........it's all more of the same new tech hype.

I'm not so impressed with great graphics anymore because you can take crappy textures and models, throw in some really cool shaders and post process effects, and end up with a very good looking render. Gameplay is what I'm looking for now.

Which is why Spore will rule. Even though that guy stole my
    idea.

Gamers with a DX10 card are able to play on DX9 servers, but with the limitation of the respective server. Vice versa it is not possible for gamers with DX9 cards to play on DX10 servers due to the limited features.

Da hell. There are going to be separate servers for DX9 and DX10.
And you can only shoot down trees and stuff int he DX10 version.....

    Crysis already sucks.

I'm sure someone will try hacking it so that some of those features will become available for DX9 cards. Just give them a little while longer. Also I hope Spore does dominate.
