[Tutorial] Deploying VC++ 2005 Express Apps

I decided to write a tutorial on application deployment with VC++ 2005 Express. I figured it'd be nice to have this info all in one place for people. The idea came from ulillillia's thread, and from the frusturation caused in my own exprience with the subject.

    Linkage

    Criticism welcome.

I didn't see anything about just statically linking to the runtime library so you don't have to distribute anything. Did I miss it? Or am I wrong about what you have to do?

Perhaps posting some screenshots would help. I could get some if needed since I have the express version. I have Windows XP Pro SP2.

Statically linking didn't even occur to me. When I had to do this, I was using C++CLI, which doesn't allow you to statically link against the CRT. I believe there are other scenerios where you may want or need to link dynamically as well.

I'll add this to the tutorial when I get the chance.

    Ok.

There's a major difference between using C++/CLI and just regular C++. VC++ 2005 is not terribly intuitive when you're just trying to write standard C++ code, though, so even helping people through that is a good idea.

By the way, it took me some time to understand the first sentence, mainly because of an unfortunate typographical error: "those of use" should be "those of us".

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.
