I do realize it's a short list, and I should have added a few more, but I tried to be broad in the categories, so I named some of the types. Emacs got it's own category cuz it's my fave and for us *nixers, it's popular.
Yeah, not fond of vi, I prefer nano if I were to go with a editor like that.
Not fond of KDevelop either, it's not a bad thing, I just prefer my editor and terminal.

    twomers,
I'm definitely NOT calling them equals, we can all agree that Kate is superior
I just listed that as a general category for those type of editors.

Glad to see all the feedback, it's interesting stuff.

Emacs should be under Notepad then, otherwise you should have placed vi in a category of its own. Your bias just means that vi wins as long as Emacs does not have more votes than all the other three categories combined

I wasn't talking about vim, I've never used vim, hell I don't even have it installed. I was talking about vi, and how vi and nano are console editors? Can't think of a better term atm, but you know what I mean.

Just about nobody uses plain Vi (although its handy being on almost anything UNIX off the bat). Vim on the other hand is in the same class as EMACS.

Ah, well maybe vim votes should go for emacs(due solely to the fact that they're of the same type of editor?)
I didn't mean to be editor specific in this poll, NOR make a competition, just a curious poll is all.

IDE's, they're the only things I've used. In particular, it's Microsoft's Visual C++ 2005 Express, the only one I've used at the moment. I would like to get Visual Studio 2005, but that may be quite a while (it's expensive for one, even the lowest edition, and the cheapest one is near my upper spending limit).

Wow, QuestionC, you don't have to be an ass about it, but if you happened to MISS IT, I DID mention that I haven't ever USED Vim. This implies that I don't really KNOW MUCH about it, and was going off ONLY what I was just told by CrazyNorman.
Congrats on the success of dampering a friendly poll with rudeness.

Lumping emacs and vi together is like saying "Israelis, Palestinians, all the same thing!" Sorry to relieve you of your ignorance, but this is one of the biggest, hottest, most famous flamewar topics in the history of computers.

So to some of us, it was you who came off looking incredibly rude.

Well, I think that you should either have not made it a poll at all, or else listed all as general categories. After all, "emacs" is editor specific.

Really, really? comparing two pieces of computer software is similar to comparing two long time conflicting nationalities. The same, really?

IDE... makes life so much easier. I had to use a command line compiler a few years back ( Borland early one ) I hated it. Im so glad they brought IDE's in, Although the first one I had was DevC++ 4.880 which had the most sarcastic compiler messages ever. I remember I wote a 1200 line C program once for a college assignment not long after I started my course. I had one error, and it didn;t even highlight the error, just said
"Syntax error". It took me an extra hour to go through the code line by line, all I miseed was a closing brace to a for loop scope. But partly my fault for not turning matching brace highlightings on.
Then I moved onto Visual C++ 6.0 and thought that was ok apart from a dodgy compiler from time to time. Now I use Visual C++ 2003.net and DevC++ 4.992 only for test programs mainly. But im gald I ditched Borland's command line. I have also had a trial with Borland BuilderX, but they abandoned the project, so that was a waste of time in the end.

I kid, I kid. There is a lot of history behind this topic, and I must confess to having gotten into some pretty impassioned diatribes about 'hjkl' myself. Nowadays, arguments about this are pretty much always tongue-in-cheek.

Honestly, comparing vi and emacs is pointless.
    vi is better.

I didn't say it's the same, I said it's like it. And you must be joking if you think people don't get into fist fights over it. It's stupid but true.
