    ATI Vs. nVidia...

Argh! I just read that nVidia is planning to
release the Geforce 4 (NV-25) as early as next
month. I read this from Usenet, so I don't know
how reliable it is. But if it's true, this sucks.
I was just about to buy a new Geforce 3-based
computer next week (if my pay check was big
enough), and for some reason I'm angry that
the Geforce 4 will be released soon after.

Why do these companies release things so close
toghether? Intel has released about a bizillion
Pentium IV processors this week alone. You buy
the best you can get, wake up the next morning,
and find that it's outdated. It's very annoying.

Anyway, just wondering... Which do you prefer:
ATI or nVidia? For those of you who have seen
both, which is better? The Radeon 8500 or the
Geforce 3? If this Geforce 4 rumor is true, do
any of you know how much better it'll be than
the Radeon 8500, or the Geforce 3?
    Staying away from General.

Why is a product upgrade a bad thing? Usually it pushes down the cost of the other products sold by the company with the new product, and likewise puts pressure on the competitor to respond with with new products or lower prices.

The release of a new card doesn't make the one you were going to get any worse.

The GeForce 3 cards are exceptional. Also the cost of these cards will come down as the GeForce 4 is released. This will make a GeForce 3 card excellent value. One thing to watch out for is that especially with win xp these cards do not like to play ball with via chipsets so make sure that if you go amd then do not get a board with a via chipset or south bridge on it. I believe compatability is of little issue on intel based systems if you are going p4.

One interesting thing is that Hercules are dropping nvidia because of this very problem and will start to manufacture ati based cards instead.

Just think of it this way Static...by the time the card is released it is already outdated.

I'm using a GeForce 3 on XP with no problems. Only thing I did was download the newest drivers.

Don't get an ATI... I got an All-In-Wonder Radeon, it was pretty expensive and didn't work right (Tv thing didn't work and my games were getting like 15 fps). I'm now back to my nVidia TNT2 (pile of crap but beats ATI).

I actually just got a GeForce 2 a couple weeks ago...

It should actually meet my needs for the next 3 years or so.

You dont have to buy a top of the line video card every time one comes out. The only reason I got my GeForce 2 is because I finally, after 3 years of having a Stealth II G460, had a game that needed more than my Stealth. That game is Mechwarrior 4. I expect my GeForce 2 should last the same amount of time...

i've been using the original geforce 1 since it came out and it has completely matched my needs even though i am a very heavy games player - your geforce 3 is going to be an excellent card and will stand you in good stead for a good few years.

In my gaming mag they gave the GeForce TI500 4.5 stars and they gave the ATI radeon 8500 4 stars -mainly because of the price.

I have the VIA southbridge chipset and most things don't like to play ball with it - SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer 5.1 for one. Also the RAID0 does not work correctly or at least has some problems on ASUS boards - also what I have. Perhaps they've fixed this. It kept corrupting my files and doing source code dumps into my autoexec.bat. Don't know how but some Windows source was dumped (prob from a DLL or something) to it at one time and just ASCII giberrish at another. Disconnected the RAID0 and no problems since. I thought DLLs were stored in binary format so I don't know how this happened - nor did tech support, but that's not all that surprising.

ASUS blamed the prob on Creative and Creative blamed ASUS. Typical tech support answer. We've all been there before haven't we?

have a look at the forums on the via sites. You will soon see that it is that darn south bridge which is causing the trouble. I have almost exactly the same problems with an original asus a7v. For win xp you should manually install the drivers you need rather than using install programs which rarely if ever work correctly in win xp.btw. good luck getting a response from asus. I have sent 6 mails over a month and recieved 0 replies!!!

well: I've seen lots of GeForce3 vs Radeon 8500 and the GeForce wins on fps and texel/s count. but, I use ATI and I'll always use ATI, that's because it wins on quality, I've seen the effects of the SmartShader and it's quite impressive, though I don't have a 8500 and I'm not planning to have it, I'm planning to buy the first DirectX 9-Compliant board ATI releases.

I've always been an nVidia fan. They are just really cool. I have never had a problem with their video cards, and they work pretty fast. I've never tried an ATI though.
