This is really just a disguised way to look for new interesting software :)

Name some of the software you simply can't live without. That software that you like to have around even if you don't always use it; aka your favorites.

Snap! I also have both of these. I think the AVG Free virus killer is a good tool. Never let me down and always updates when needed, better than that awful Norton 2001 I had, it was so outdated.

Will definitely take a look. For the life of me I can't seem to remember the name of P2P I used around 5 or 6 years ago when I was first introduced to web free artists and/or unsupported artists. It was not napster or kazzaa no. They hardly did anything of that. I remember it was blue *shrug*. The searching was web based, the download through a client.

Anyways, great music was being distributed back then with full approval and blessing of these great artists. Some of them were simply awsome. And a few of them started their careers doing it. Heck! Even one of my favorite bands, Hooverphonic, distributed some of their songs there.

• Matlab! It makes life so easy. (that or one of the other mathematical packages that are around the place, excel included).

Wow. Norton is the worst anti-virus ever. Do yourself a favor and delete every single trace of that piece of crap off your computer, and install AVG Free.

I agree. Norton 2004 was rubbish. I paid 80.00 for it and then it asked me to rebuy it for 50.00 when the licsence ran out. AGV is one of the best kits you can get your mitts on for nought. But at uni I have to use McAfee, any views on that product? I thinks its ok but still prefer AGV which I have installed on my PC at home - the one I am using now lol

Everything norton sucks. I was trying to set up a simple network on my mother's laptop and every other second you get a message "your connection is insecure, would you like to activate blah blah blah, NO. Then a warning message comes out every other second.

WinDVD plays my movies and is awesome.

Another program to stay away from is ZoneAlarm. It will annoy the hell out of you!!! Anything that has to access the internet such as games or updates, will be blocked unless you accept the stupid message. It has a "Remember this option" checkbox if you accept or decline, but it doesn't remember your selection! :( *SHIVER* Forget that.....

I've been away from this thread and started looking from last to first post.

How I love foxit, I have my browser at work set to automatically open pdfs with it. I just hate acrobat.

Nothing else is needed. Well, bash is useful, for running inside Emacs, and for starting up Emacs, I suppose. X.org is useful since Emacs works in that with nicer fonts and colors. I suppose Synaptic Package Manager is a useful program, in order to have an easy way of downloading and installing Emacs. And of course there's the software it uses. Then there are the various programs you can use inside Emacs, like gcc, mit-scheme, ghc, hugs, .... I guess the software that recognizes usb drives is pretty useful, too, and the kernel's pretty swell, but not as swell as EEEEEEEEEmacs! Xemacs is better, but not as good. Emacs is my best friend <3.

Yes, but its not your fault. I really wish the bloodshed team kept the Dev flame alive, but everybody has to move on to better things don't they? That aside, I still think Dev is the best "FREE" IDE out there. The mngw is a good compiler in my view and concidering I still have MSVC++ 6.0 installed in college, I am gald I can get home to a more compliant compiler than flagging declaring "i" within a for loop is invalid

In c it is invalid. VC6 notifies it:

In c++ it is valid and VC++6 compiles it well.
So what is the problem?

I worded that a little worng, I mean when I use the same variable in two loops.

That error crops up mostly in nested loops.

EDIT to solve the problem using that compiler I have to declare 'i' just once for all for loops using that scope

Isn't it the standard behavior? That the variable is delared from the point where it was declared till the end of the scope?

Yup. I don't really see why some people name Dev-C++ as the best C++ IDE.

It sure is simple to use and quick to load. But, really... it's way outdated these days, it always had a terrible debugger UI, it has a weak class browser, it has no make support, and it lacks some modern productivity features (workspaces and project dependencies to name one).

It's not that it makes Dev-C++ a bad IDE. It's simply doesn't make it the best.

Mario, is that the reason Bloodshed abandoned it? Did they decide to start from scratch and leave it dead a buried?

Nah. There's some thread on their forums that seem to indicate they had to move on to other things. Life... it caught up on them :)

Was it mentioned that a small number of people were still working on it whenever they felt inclined to, or something? I remember reading something about that ... somewhere. I think it was on these forums. So it's dead save a handful of programmers?

As far as development is concerned, the only thing I know is that wxDev-C++ is the one being developed by some cult followers. There was one new version last month after a 9 month hiatus...

Dev-C++ as is, has no one working on it.
