cable
512kb Satellite.
Cable, 6Mbit.

How I envy that speed. (Not the bill.) :D
I only have 52.0 Kbps. :(
3.1Mb DSL
350~ down, 32up
Actually, it WAS 2Mbit, but with the DTV (digital television, which costs only extra $4 per month), there's 6Mbit reserved for the DTV and 6Mbit that you can be used with a normal connection (that makes a total of 12Mbit). Also, here, in Estonia the highest speed available is about 15Mbit and that costs about $40.Quote:

I'm using DSL now, which is nice: speed that costs less than an appendage.
No matter how fast your connection, on most sites, you still have to wait for a bloated php/asp script with two dozen database queries to run before the page displays.
Cable, 10 Mbit up and down. $7/month. I thought about getting 100 Mbit but it costs twice as much.
Im using 15+ mbit fiber here. 10 mbit for $7!!! Comcast offers $40 bbucks for 6mbit here! BTW, someone should add a "greater then..." selection to the poll
I am on a T3 line.
Same, except my upload is like 100. But who cares about upload anyway...Quote:

I use 28.8 KB/s, lucky me.
I have some 14.4 modems that still work... didn't know anyone used anything that slow anymore though.
Up untill a little while ago, I was on a connection that could vary from 14.4kbps to 24kbps, if you were lucky.Quote:

I get free dial-up from school, but that's as fast as I could go. I'd telnet to the school to test my programs and have to wait a quarter- or half-second between keypresses. I couldn't handle it. My wife finally caved on getting cable internet when she lost an ebay auction at the last second and couldn't get another bid up in time. :)
16m Adsl
The numbers are getting higher :D

Cable isn't available out here in the sticks, where I live.
100 mbit up/down
is that home or office?Quote:

Home. Wireless/cable.
No, I mean that 1Gbit should mean 128Mb/s.
If you say so. I'm too tired to think - bad flu+lots of drugs=drowsy twomers.
Maybe I infected you. Two days ago my temperature was like 40...
I think it's such a dumb marketing scheme to advertise bandwidths with "bits". It then gets confusing because people will abbreviate it to just a "b", and then you have no idea where Mb means megabyte or megabit. To make matters worse, most web browser use "bytes" when displaying download speeds, so to find out if you're getting the maximum bandwidth, you'll have to do division/multiplication by 8.
For the record, my bandwidth is 190 kilobytes/second.
Heh, I agree with you, joe. There is a difference between kb and kB though. It's even worse when you're using forumlae where differences between capital and their lower case relatives make all the difference, t for time/temp, and T for time/temp. And it's even worse when different subjects you study use different cap-types for the same variable ... and people talk about common standards :p I won't even go into the different alphabets they use (again making reference to the capital/small letters - small and capital 'd' and 'delta' ... sigh). I doubt even wchars have enough variables to define all the variables around!
videotron cable
600 kbps dl
128 kbps ul
is there a difference between kbps and kb/s?
my friend says he thinks one of them is bits and the other one is bytes.
No. There's no difference.
"Per" and / mean the same thing.
I just upgraded to FiOS which is 2.5 Megabytes/second (20 Megabits) down and 1 Megabytes/second (8 Megabits) up. Not a bad upgrade, I'm enjoying this awesome speed.
Actually, there is a difference. kbps is kilobits per second and kb/s is kilobytes per second. Remember, 8 bits to the byte. Now if it were written as KB/S (notice the capital 's'), then it would translate as kilobits per second.Quote:
