Softimage, Lightwave and C4D are used as much as either Max or Maya for movies.

For a 3D program to suit microsoft's style of program, Amapi's Carrera Sturdio, Curious Labs Poser [ though that is more like playing with digital barbie dolls ], Eon's Vue de'Esprit, Daz3D's Bryce [ used to be Corels, before Corel it was Metacreations. ]

Autodesk recently bought out Alias, so Max and Maya are now made by same conglomeration, Autodesk. part of the deal was that Maya will always be developed for all operating systems it currently supports, where Max is limited to the least capable one, windows.
