    Outsourcing

No doubt that most or all of you have heard of outsourcing. Since I am still in high-school but am looking forward to going to college to become a computer programmer, I need your opinions. How bad is outsourcing, in the US, of computer programmers? Did you find a job without too much hard searching? Have you ever been outsourced? What's your stance on this issue?

The law with outsourcing is to only outsource the things that aren't your core competency. That means, if you're a software company, outsource your payroll and graphics design - don't outsource your programmers.

People also find it much harder to outsource programmers than other IT staff. It's easy to outsource your tech support. But try to outsource programmers, but managing the design from the US, is close to impossible. Programming is a lot more creative than tech support, and you can't express an important object oriented design over MSN, email and the phone with a 2 second delay.

And like anything, if you're good, no matter what happens (short of nuclear fallout) you'll always have a job.

I agree with stovellp...I recently heard a program on NPR about the huge need of American programmers! until 2010 there are more open jobs for American programmers than there will be graduating students - why such a drop in cs degrees? because 4-5 years ago everyone was afraid of just that - outsourcing.

So don't be afraid jmd15, there'll be jobs out there for CS majors.

Don't say that!!! People are going to think "Big Money" and you'll have every man and his dog enrolled in an IT course again, and it'll be Bubble 2.0.

    >>> But try to outsource programmers

Odd that so many coding shops in India are turning away clients now because they can't keep up with the demand for outsourced software development from the US and Europe though isn't it?

If you were a student in Bangalore right now, I'd say go for it.

It's good to hear that it's not as bad as it has been portrayed. Thanks guys.
