yesterday my friend and i were hanging out at my house and we were in my room playing gamecube and then he notices one of my c++ books...
friend: whats c++?
me: its a computer programming language
friend: and your into that kind of thing?

Personally I consider geek a comjpliment. I would be annoyed if someone called me a nerd - to me you have to hav poor fashion sense and be somewhat bad at - not simply choosing to focus on other things - social interaction. Geek, however, to me at least, does not mean you're bad at social interaction; it means you have other priorities.
I also think it's impossible to like programming and not be a geek, at least to some extent - note how I say "like programming". You *can* be a professional programmer without really *liking* programming, and if you dislike it you're less likely to be a geek, unless you like something else like physics or math or something - you can be a physics geek or a math geek just like you can be a computer geek.
Two final links about geeks are listed in my sig (err.. I think, I'll add them in an edit if they aren't), around the part about my Geek Code (which I often attach to my emails as well) :)

Funnily enough I get that kind of attitude from my collegues in Computing labs and it really ........es me off. It's just one of those attention things I don't like and it leads to everyone copying my work (especially coursework) and it's not entirely the fact they copy that ........es me off, it's the fact that they'll get nowhere when I'm not there etc.Quote:

If you cared, you wouldn't let them copy. You're only hurting them.
Well, you can take solace in the fact that when they get to the final exam for the course and aren't able to look at your code, they'll fail miserably. :)

I tell you what is worse : being a girl geek. All my female friends hate computers, sometimes I find boring to hang out with girls. So most of my friends are (male ;) ) programmers but somethimes they under estimate my knowledge or get angry if i know more than them. btw I didn't post in a long time because I am working on php helping a friend on his web.Quote:

When I tell some one that I am a programmer I let them know that I'm a computer geek before they can say it. It hurts less that way :)
At school, I try and be subtle in my geekness but it just comes out at times. I mean sure I am a geek and I am proud, but I go to a private school where there are a bunch of stupid preps and there are less than 10 geeks in the entire school (I'm the only one in my grade :( ) A long with being only a newbie in coding, my geekness is just a tad low. For example, in a conversation about colleges it went like this:
Random prep: "Yeah, im probably going to go to some state school and get a degree in criminal justice so I can be a professional athlete."
Me: "Im probably going to go to some tech school and get a degree in comp sci"
Random prep: "Comp sci? Is that like chinese?"

I'm a programmer and I am a geek. I don't care if someone calls me a geek, when did that become a derogatory term? In my school it is so sad how lacking we are in technological knowledge. I mean, when does a high-school's best computer class teach you how to USE PROGRAMS LIKE MS WORD AND EXCEL!?!? This is very frusterating because I pretty much can't take any computer course :mad: . Mainly because all my available computer courses are A. Stupid B. Useless C. So much under my level it's hard to follow along D. Did I mention stupid? Another thing I don't like, is the automatic association of programmer with hacker. Ok, so maybe that association is correct sometimes, but it still shouldn't be automatically placed! I do not know of a single other programmer/computer geek in my school. So these forums are the only place I can discuss programming with others. I mean my computer teacher, that teaches web design, made us do this idiotic typing program. Fun stuff... She made us take tests in typing where you had to have a certain speed. I, of course, got the highest and the teacher couldn't match my score. My friends know I'm extremely into computers but they are into cars and snowmobiles. I can't wait until college with REAL computer classes, and real programmers!
they always call me weird but not geek :P Actually the only person I hang out and doesn't know a computer language is my brother (which he's actually straggling to learn java but with no patience).
The only exception to this rule (that all my friend are into programming) is a guy (a teacher (yeah I am that old)) who is crazy about matlab ...now He is DEFINATELY a geek and not because of matlab ...it's all about the attitude.
geek is neither good or bad it's just the attitude..a programmer can either be geek or not ..like everyone else
According to your opinion I wouldn't be a geek. I am not socially inept, I have plenty of friends. What I think when I hear geek is just some person really into either science or computers.
Geeks aren't social inept, nerds are.

Usually when I say I program games people think I type in binary directly to DOS (as if I have no operating system) or something. When I say I use C++ and use a program to make games, they think it's a program that says: "choose image for player", "choose level name", etc.
