    Chinese Invasion....

The Invasion of the Chinese Cyberspies (And the Man Who Tried to Stop Them)
An exclusive look at how the hackers called TITAN RAIN are stealing U.S. secrets
    By NATHAN THORNBURGH

It was another routine night for Shawn Carpenter. After a long day analyzing computer-network security for Sandia National Laboratories, where much of the U.S. nuclear arsenal is designed, Carpenter, 36, retreated to his ranch house in the hills overlooking Albuquerque, N.M., for a quick dinner and an early bedtime. He set his alarm for 2 a.m. Waking in the dark, he took a thermos of coffee and a pack of Nicorette gum to the cluster of computer terminals in his home office. As he had almost every night for the previous four months, he worked at his secret volunteer job until dawn

I've heard from many opinions that it's a poorly written story, but an interesting chain of events. What I'd be interested in is if anything diplomatic has happened about this. I know there are theories that the Chinese government is involved (because of their speed, skill, and apparent resources), but at the very least, they're not doing much to stop these guys. And I'd like to find out if anyone's actually called the Chinese ambassador to ask them to shed a little light on the issue for us.

It's been theorized in recent decades that US-China relations could easily turn into another Cold War, and with China's space program moving forward, I think that nightmare could come true - an international incident like this would really not help things right now.

edit: incidentally, do we have any Chinese users here? I don't recall seeing any, but I think they'd have an intersting (and certainly more informed) viewpoint on the political situation in China.

The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage by Cliff Stoll is a book that tells an extraordinarily similar story, although set nearly 20 years ago and the KGB allegedly behind the hackers rather than China. If you're interested in computer intrigue I recommend reading it (get it from your library). Stoll also outlines his computer skepticism in the book, which is interesting in its own right.

    sean,
I was looking more at the issues of what carpenter did and the failure of these contractors to properly secure thier networks.
though you raise a few good points, the full article says the chinese Government says the allegation doesn't warrant refuting.
I doubt that there will be another cold war, China holds a few trillion in debt money for the us, as well as having 50% of the us economy in us owned factories in it.

    anonytmouse,

    rephrase:
    the us spies on everyone
    everyone spies on the us.

They're actively pursuing a reduction in US assets in China. Few people expected a Cold War before the end of WWII.

Well, with GWB's debt inflation policies, can you blame them for wanting to not get sucked down into a depression with the us?

the current debt that the us governement has will take about 150 years to pay off, if all other federal spending is zeroed until it's payed off.

courtesy of the war on terrorism, and the war in iraq.
breaking economic ties is only good sence for all countries with the waste of the bush government.
