    7. It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.
    40. There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third one works.*

Well there's your 8-hour moment of silence. 2 vacancies in 4 months - that's pretty rare.

Five posts, but it was intelligent design, not evolution ;-)

Roberts has been nominated to replace him. It is both a safe political (Roberts is going to be confirmed) and practical (maintains a full court) move.

    > maintains a full court

Eh? Roberts was already filling a vacancy. Shifting him to fill another vacancy won't fill the court.

O'Conner's resignation is worded so that she will continue to serve until she is replaced. By having Roberts replace Rehnquist, you don't replace O'Conner, and therefore, the court stays full.

Roberts will not replace Rehnquist -- O'Conner will. Roberts will be just filling a vacant chair.

WTH?!? Why is he not nominating a current justice for the chief justice spot? Isn't that how it traditionally worked?

I always thought the job of Chief Justice belonged to the senior member of the U.S. Supreme Court.

No. The job is nominated by the president...I had to wiki it. But in acuality only 3 of the 16 C. Justices have been nominated from the court:
