There were several reasons, but one of them were a whole bunch of trolls registering anonymously.

Why too bad? Anyone with an email address can register--it's only an impediment to people who don't have email addresses or who have already used an email address to register. The first case is rare, and the second case is what the system is designed to stop.
Or do you mean that it's too bad that unregistered people trolled?
