Only complete retarded morons disable right click

Is it just me, or is the disabling of right clicks on a web page simply for the sake of showing off the fact that someone can insert java code, or does the jerkoff actually think someone is going to steal his precious html made with geocities page builder and images made with paintbrush. It doesn't matter most of the time. People who disable right clicking on web pages are pompous arrogant pricks with so many self dillusions about their "l33tness" that their head is so far up their ass, it's coming out of their mouth again.

Sorry, hope I didn't offend anybody, this is just my honest opinion.

Most often code to disable mouse actions only works in IE or Netscape. Try www.opera.com for the Opera 5 browser - I have never been denied access to right click using it.

I believe it is also in violation of the W3C's (http://www.w3c.org) standards for browsers to disable mouse/keyboard actions from the user.

i feel compelled to answer this.
I have before have had people steal code directly from my site, lifted and passed of as their own. Thats copyright theft. Can i prove it ? - no. Well yes buts its difficult . So If i spend four hours writing cgi scripts to process a database - do i have the right to protect that code? Yes.
Geocities? - i am on a dedicated server.
These sound like the words of a bitter person who has tried to lift graphics or code from a site and been prevented.

if you spent six hours writing a high end application a further three hours preparing nice graphics for the ui, would you give your application, source and all graphic files away for free?

Bah! All talk. 99% of the time, some tiny script kiddie is trying to learn how to implement some html tag; besides, imitation is the best form of flattery. I'd like to see one such example of a webpage that stole your code, then I might think differently.

Even if the context menu is disabled, you can always use the View - Source menu item. If you're really desperate, you can write a program to retrieve the source (see http://www.sunlightd.com/Projects/DownloadURL/).

    > So If i spend four hours writing cgi scripts to process a database

Then you shouldn't leave such scripts around in a downloadable form. HTML source has to be downloaded (for the browser to read); CGI scripts or programs don't.

There is currently no way to protect your HTML source code. It's questionable whether you ever could, thanks to its nature. If you want to protect your code, put it in a compiled form (Flash, Shockwave, ActiveX, Java).

I'm not questioning whether people should be able to protect their IP - of course they should. However, HTML does not offer you the capability.

Hell yeah I would, unless I designed them for some company who claimed IP to them. Besides, it'd be a display of my work, without having to pay advertising fees. If it's site hits you're worried about (and someone else might get many hits from your "high end graphics"), then you should rethink the reason for displaying stuff on the web; hit counters are the work of satan. Besides, if you know who stole your gfx, then simply send them an email that says "Hope you're liking the gfx I made, have a nice day."

After all, there are millions of people screaming to steal vital html from gozips.uakron.edu/~jwm7/

This arguement has been discussed so much it's starting to get boring.

Writing an HTML document/Website is kind of like writing a reference book. It may take you years to compile the information and organize it so it looks all bright and nice, but someone can take your information and use it and you will never know b/c the information you have been compiling has porbably been compiled countless times in the past in one form or another. It's the same way with HTML. All of those funky things you've seen people do, they have no doubt learned from someone else (by viewing their source, maybe) and they have learned from someone else, on-and-on-and-on until you get down to the first person that has ever used it.

I learned frames by looking at source of frames pages.

My friend learned CSS through looking at the source of some more complex websites.

It isn't as bad as you people make it out to be. Without the view source option, the amount of people that are able to do more advanced things would die, and you'd have more bullcrappy looking webpages that are slow and poorly designed.

I'm not saying that open source is good; i'm not saying open source is bad. I'm just saying that it shouldn't be complained about to too much of an extent.

ScourFish - you are trying to be controversial and raise arguements, dont bother.

I will protect my code if i want. If someone wants to learn html use a tutorial.

I put a lot of work in to making site utilities that are free to people to use along with programming tutorials and the like. I dont see why someone should be able to take this away. If you actually check my site there are no right click stops and you can view the code.

the site is converting to php to create pages otf, this will stop script kiddies like yourself ripping of sites.

I'm guessing that this topic can't degrade any farther.

    This topic will now die.

Nope, can't play tennis for my life. I will replace the files after I figure out how to upload godpong. Geocites, seems to have a file size limit, I can't figure out how to upload the file to tripod. And I can't get into crosswinds. I have great luck
