I'm not sure I like the way they did this. Looking at their graph, Java takes a nosedive from December of 03 to March of 04. It goes from what looks like around 24% to about 18% or so. So Java was steady, steady, steady, lost a full quarter of its share in a 3 months period, and then was steady, steady, steady? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm sorry but I don't consider search engine hits to be in any way an accurate representation of whats "popular"
Even C took a rise of 5% ( a quarter of their market share if you will ) from September to December last year. I don't remember anything about that months and I doubt that 25% more projects were started in C than the months before or after. C++ dropped for the same time. I don't remember any C++ projects in my field of work getting cancelled in favor of C.
That's a nice little table, but says nothing about popularity of languages.
Edit:
The table also says that Felix ranks higher than VB.NET. What the f* is Felix ? It seems to be so popular that I never even heard of it.

Why would C be more popular over C++ exactly....? I mean, I can't *see* how anyone could like just pure C over C++ unless you're working on hardcore algorithms, in which case you could just use C++ without the classes......*shrugs*

It's not a ranking of hobbyists; sometimes (frequently) you don't have a choice of language.

I think a lot has to do with what languages are being taught in college and what semsters, if you notice Java and C++ drop during spring semesters. So i guess not many students search the net for tutorials and forums.

We know they don't search. Someone tells them about this board and how we will do it for them and so we get bothered with yet another homework question. No google, no search, no brain, no hit for C++.
From now on I'm giving up .NET and going back to C.

Spoken like a true C++ zealot.I could give you reasons why C can be a better choice than C++, but that's not the reason I use C when I have the choice. C just feels better to me, it's impossible to explain.
