woof !

hi guys, hows everyone? actually i was thinking of adopting a dog from the local pound..just wanted to know if anyone has any experience with adopting a dog..does anyone out here have a dog as a pet?? Any idea whether i should go in for a younger dog or a dog who is say..something like 3-4 years old?

If you get a dog, get a puppy. They are more fun and you will like them more and of course they will like you more since they will grow around you. Older dogs are fun if you live in a village. My father used to go hunting so we adopted this dog from a friend of ours, the dog would go missing for like a day and we would always find it on the friends house eheh. But that was one of the strongest and smartest dogs ive ever had, so were its puppies hehe. Good times, whatever you do you gonna have fun.

hmm..thanx for the info IL. i was thinking of getting a puppy, but i kinda look after the dogs in the neighbourhood, you know give them food n stuff, n all the puppies ive come across have been really playful..so i was thinking bout taking up a puppy, but thought that id rather ask some people before making the decision..btw, any idea bout how you have to keep a dog fit n stuff? how many times do i need to take him for a walk?? n do they come for walks that easily?? i mean, ive watched cartoons n stuff and the dogs there dont seem to be willing to get off their butts to go for a walk !!

Thats funny ehehe, cartoon dogs are always lazy, real dogs are not. I would let my dog loose all day around the house, then again we have a huge garden/backyard. Take the dog out as much as possible. I live in the city now so i cant keep a dog here mainly because of room and cant take them out much. When you live in the countryside you dont have to clean after them, they do it themselves ehehe. So you have to consider that issue as well.

One benefit to getting an older do is that they are through their "puppy phase". Until my dog was about a year and a half old, he ripped things up, got into stuff he wasn't supposed to and was honestly more bother than fun. He's older now and much more laid back.

As far as walks and stuff, my dog lives on a farm, so he gets to run around as much as he wants. Sometimes he goes off hunting or whatever for a day or so and we don't see him at all. He eventually comes back, usually with something dead.

That said, I don't recommend getting a big dog if you don't plan on giving him enough exercise. Even smaller dogs need plenty of exercise. If you don't have a fenced-in yard or don't have a park you can take him to regularly, get a tiny dog.

well, i stay in a city, but, yes, i can take him for long walks becoz i stay rite opposite the sea, and i guess the doggie is going to get lots of exercise..but then time is important as well..i dont seem to find the time to look after myself..so lets see if i can arrange for someone to take him out..i know about the puppy phase..coz we used to have cats. cats are not as hyperactive as dogs, but still, ive had some pretty kool experiences with cats scratching at stuff n what not !!

I've two adopted dogs: one (a black lab) I got from a shelter when she was 6 weeks old, and the other (a chocolate lab) I got from some aquaintances who wanted to get rid of her when she was a year old.

I suggest rescuing a dog from a pound or a shelter, rather then buying one from a breeder. Believe it or not, the adopted dogs are thankful and do show their appreciation - I'm not sure how to describe this fact, but there is something different in their behavior. Also, I am in favor of getting a very young dog, so that you could properly train it - older dogs are trainable, it is just much harder.

thats the same reason why i wanted to adopt a dog from a pound..i had two options..a friend of mine had a dog that gave birth to something like 5 puppies..and the mother of these puppies is a throughbred labrador..but i was insistent on getting a dog from the pound..i am not too sure whether i will end up adopting the dog this year itself, coz i hardly find the time..but i am trying my best to convince my parents i really dont know, but i have always had a liking for dogs..i am not that attracted to other animals, but dogs, yes, i just love them.
