    CygWin Project ?

Just a simple info gathering to help with decision making.

What do you guys think about CygWin ? Would this be a way of simplifying the use of linux on a windows system, does it lack power, features, or any other concept that would lose the overall balance of the linux OS?

Well it's a good way of getting going, but some things are pretty hacky compared to the real thing.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) is another option.

I use Cygwin all the time because it comes with gcc. It's extremely easy to install and that's why I use it.

Every computer at my school uses Unix.
I use Cygwin and Putty to be able to log in and run Unix applications remotely with my Windows XP computer.

I use Cygwin so I have a proper shell on my Win PC. And also so that I can run GNU make scripts. And so I can compile Mozilla.
    All the buzzt!

Yesterday I installed CygWin and CygWin/X. It looks pretty good, and considering the positive input, it should be an interesting adventure.

I could not help but notice on the CygWin/X site that KDE 3.1 can be installed. Has anyone had any experience with this? Also, noting that on the site it indicates that all new software must be compiled to suit CygWin; is this what has to happen with KDE?

    Thanks for the input.

Yep, you have to compile KDE in cygwin. http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/ has some helpful information on compiling/installing KDE in cygwin.

Thanks Scribber That information is most helpful, and I will check into that right away.

This board is so good for support and helpful hints. Thank-you all.

KDE looks good and the whole Cygwin package is pleasing. One issue that I am having is, what is the root password? During the installation nothing was indicated to enter a password. To apply some commands root is required.

Does anyone have an answer for this?
