Red face Thanks for locking my post and calling me a cheater.

Ummmm... so many problems with this....

First off, I SERIOUSLY doubt we are allowed to help you on a test. Nobody here is going to help you cheat.

Second, the question says to list the data types, scope and storage, you ask us to define all of these things and point them out in the code, then say you aren't asking us to do it for you?? Thats exactly what you just asked so hell yeah I'm going to accuse you of asking us to do it for you!

Sorry, this is obviously an end of the semester test, if by now you don't know these simple programming concepts we aren't going to help you pretend to the teacher that you do.
If your teacher says "You can use any resource: your C++ book, the internet, anything, just as long as you don't talk to each other", then using the internet as a source isn't cheating, is it?

Maybe if you wanted to be anal-retentive, you COULD technically classify posting a question on the forums as talking. But, you guys aren't in this class. You aren't in the same room. Therefore, I'm NOT "sharing answers" between students. I'm simply using the internet as a resource. If I found an article on a C++ tutorial site that covers all of the things I asked you (storage duration, variable type, scope), then wouldn't that be "cheating" by your definition as well? only difference is there is no active communication.

Ok, whatever. I'm used to people giving me flak on forums. I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I was born stupid. I'm sorry I didn't have a high enough G.P.A (or the money) to go to a REAL college with REAL teachers who teach you things (as opposed to community college teachers who point at the board, scribble things that don't have much to do with what you're learning, and mumble incoherently). I'm sorry that I have A.D.D. and I can't wholeheartedly 110% focus all of my attention to my classwork or studies like the blessed majority of you can. I'm sorry that I can't afford Ritalin, and that i have to use the crappy generic "Methylphenedat" as a poor substitiute. I'm sorry for trying to make you guys violate the forum rules and CHEAT for me.

I'm sorry for the troble in Iraq. i'm sure Osama saw me asking for help on another forum at another time and said "That All*h d*mned capitalist pig whitey! How dare he ask people to do his work for him! Just for that, America will get 2 747 planes up the rear end!"

I'm sorry for cancer. I'm sure that came from when I asked people on the Jinx forums how to hack into my school network. I'm sorry for sin..I'm sure that came from when I was on the volkswagen forums and i said that the Ible air stabilizer valve pumped fuel into the engine, which was bull crockery. I'm sorry for all the times I complained about being locked by mods. I 190,020% deserved each and every one of those lockings.

Speaking of which, I'll wager that this post doesn't survive for more than 30 minutes. It's a waste of time and it doesn't belong here.

While you're at it, ban me. I don't deserve to ask for help.

    k. i'm done. I'm ready to be booted.

Look I am all for helping people out even with the "homework" but a test that is a different sort of thing. A test is well a test of your knowledge not ours. I to go to a not so good school also a community college for that matter. I know that the professors are not the best and it is not just a not high quality colleges problem, comp sci teachers in general are not always the best but still.
I didn't learn everything I know by posting every problem I have on this board. I searched, tried stuff out, wrote little test programs to see how things worked. All I have to say on the matter is you get what you put in to it. Just put some time and effort into it and you will do great. Slack and not try hard and well maybe you will get lucky but I severly doubt it cause programming is not a luck thing.

    Heh.

Settle down, phosphorousgobu. No one is trying to say you are "cheating". You can only believe that if you want to. The best thing to do is believe in what's right by your morals. Ignore the post if you feel threatened by it, don't let it get to you.

Just remember this, no one can help you cheat unless you let them. In this case, someone may have helped you cheat, but it's not your fault. It would be your fault if you used the information given to you that was not yours.

    P.S. Good post prog-bman

Segmentation Fault: I am an error in which a running program attempts to access memory not allocated to it and core dumps with a segmentation violation error. This is often caused by improper usage of pointers, attempts to access a non-existent or read-only physical memory address, re-use of memory if freed within the same scope, de-referencing a null pointer, or (in C) inadvertently using a non-pointer variable as a pointer.

Nobody here probably even knows your teacher, let alone what the assignment/test realy was. If it is a test use your own knowledge, search for it online if you must, but don't expect many people to help you on a test of all things. I have no problem with helping on homework if I can (god knows I have to do that every day anyways), but I, personally, wouldn't help you or anyone on a test. Also, you could have easily worded your post in a way that you wouldn't get the answer right away, but gained the knowledge to do so.

    Ok, you win

Yes, you guys are right. I have not, however, came to you for every problem I had.

And to spite all of the people on the Jinx forums who refused to help, and you guys who think cheating is bad, I used a PIn drive the other day and copied some random guy's .cpp files from his computer while the teacher was in the room. Spite spite spite. And yes, this makes me a cheater. Ok, cool. Spite.

The reason you got the reaction here is the following:
People here are interesting in helping others learn not simply programming, but good computer science. Part of this is problem solving. So, when people see a post which looks like it is simply a request for answers, they take exception to it because they feel that the poster has not truly tried to solve the problem nor truly is interested in solving the problem, just getting the right answer to the question. This type of "learning" does not lend to understanding. Also, people here are generally fairly credible people (in the domain of the forum at least), and take exception to questions which seem to ask them to violate their integrity (such as what is perceived by asking for help on a take home test).

Now, it is possible that you were very much misinterpreted. It is also possible that asking us for help violates neither the letter nor the spirit of the exam rules (which seems a bit questionnable to me in terms of rules), but we have no way of knowing.

So, just calm down. People do want to help you learn, but there has to be some slope to the learning curve.

    Cheers

I missed the thread that caused this outburst, but it's generally a good idea to let things slide around here. We have several members that will flame you to a crisp at the slightest (possibly imagined) mistake. The problem is that they have a tendency to be right. You should look past any insults and try to find the reasoning behind the flame. Then you'll be able to read it as constructive criticism and learn how we expect things to be done.

Don't let one bad thread turn you off to Cprogramming.com. I believe that if you stick around, it will benefit you more than you could possibly imagine at this point.

Maybe my post to you was a little harsh, it was partially for you and partially to deter anyone from mistakingly helping you. I still stand by what I said though. Are you telling me your teacher would have been perfectly fine if you had gone to a C++ professional, showed him the test, then asked him for help on this test? How is this different than what happened here, except instead you typed it instead of verbally communicating it? Would you have averted your eyes or turned off your monitor if someone had finished your test for you?

And to spite all of the people on the Jinx forums who refused to help, and you guys who think cheating is bad, I used a PIn drive the other day and copied some random guy's .cpp files from his computer while the teacher was in the room. Not exactly spite if nobody here really cares. By all means, live your life this way. The point is nobody here will HELP you live your life this way.

I hope you've learned your lesson phosphorusgoku. Next time don't say that you're working on a test. Either that or start off by saying "This isn't for homework or anything. I'm just working on a new project for fun." before you ask your question.

So you recommend lying instead of blatant cheating? Why not say that it's for a test, but make it clear that you want help with the process of solving a problem, not straight up answers to the question.

um... ritalin *is* methylphenidate... that's all it is - the hydrochloride salt of methylphenicate (which is kinda like methamphetamine, but with a ketone group on the beta carbon, and the N-methyl has had a couple more carbons added to cyclize it into a ring).

it's either that compound or its not, and if its not then it wouldn't be being sold as or named the same thing.

    what's the problem?
VIM + gcc + beer... does life get any better?

Sarcasm just never seems to come across on this Internet thing. I was merely attempting to concoct a humorous notion with an underlying reference to how countless others arrive here in search of answers to problems they can't comprehend or are too much of a louse to assert any effort toward directly.
