I want to join an open source project

I'd like to help out with an open source project but all of the open source programs I use are huge and seem to be professionally developed for the most part (i.e., FireFox). Not to mention most of them are coded in C++, which I don't know much at all about.

What language are you planning to use then? I have some projects in mind but most of them are C++.

Not really planning to use any specific language, but I figured Java would be it. I'd prefer C#, but I don't see many open source projects using it. Maybe this would give me a reason to learn C++.

Yep you should C++. That would be one of the best tools you'll have in your programming arsenal. I dont see much open-source fuzz about Java.

C++ allows you to do system-level and network-level stuff at the same time I have yet see both in Java (especially in open source).

Yeah, I agree. My issue is time. If I could find a java or C# project, I could contribute right away.

    >>> seem to be professionally developed for the most part

Any open source project that is not developed to professional standards, and with a professional project management structure is a project that is destined to fail.

We have had hundreds of groups start up on the forums here with the idea of creating something collectively. They usually fall quite quickly. Everyone wants to be the boss, or do the "cool" bits of the program. Nobody is prepared to be the grunts.

I agree. I expect the project I join to be professional in nature, but when I find one in C++, I can't help. Java or C++ is another story. If the project was less formal and in C++, I may be of use. In regards to the grunt work, I'd be more than happy to perform grunt work for a large project such as Firefox, etc, but until I know a decent amount of C++ I doubt they'll let me contribute.
