Halflife 2 (not really a spoiler, but dont read if you're afraid of it)

This is a really impressive game. I haven't played much yet, but it looks promising. From what I played so far it more seems like a playground for the features it has, I hope the action gets a bit better later on.

I really like the water, it is sooo beutiful (water settings on max).

My PC ran Doom 3 passably and Far Cry just fine. Will I be able to play this alright?

The system specs are about the same or less. Minimums call for 1.2GHz proc and 256 mb of RAM with a Directx 7 video card.

Preferred specs are a 2.4 GHz proc with 512 RAM and a 256 mb Directx 9 video card.

Someone who bought the game yesterday told me that there is something that the game must download from the net; the server was supposedly really busy and it took a fairly long time. Anyone know what this is? mandatory registration, perhaps?

    From the official website:
    2. Product Authentication Delay When Installing Half-Life 2
Some consumers may experience delays in authenticating Half-Life 2 during the installation process. This is due to the high volume of consumers who have purchased Half-Life 2 and are installing the game, which is causing high traffic on the Steam authentication servers. Please inform any Half-Life 2 customers that encounter this situation to keep trying, as this is a temporary delay.

It is a mandatory registration. You cannot play the game without an internet connection. It is part of the system requirements. It's their form of verification, which I'm sure will be hacked before long.

I had a friend that had to unlock several ports on his router or through ZoneAlarm before it would work. He was ........ed.

Personally, I think it's a load of BS.

For me, after I installed the game and did the registration (which failed because the servers were too busy) I had to wait for what seemed like an hour (probably only 30 minutes) while the files were being "unlocked" whatever that meant. Then I couldn't play the game because the servers were still too busy. So, all that time installing a game and I can't play the single player campaign because of the required internet connection. I did finally manage to connect this morning and the Steam client went through all of its automatic upgrades and then I was able to get to the game's main menu screen. I wasn't able to play though because I had to go to work.

I think now that everything is unlocked for me and registered that I won't need to connect to the internet to play. I can't remember exactly, but when I right click on the Half-Life 2 game in the game list under the Steam menu and select properties there was something that said "manual" or "standalone mode available" (not sure of the exact wording). Maybe this means you can run the game without the internet connection. Can anybody test this out and see if it works? I mainly don't want to have to keep my Spyware/Firewall program running as that tends to eat up resources and cause lag in other games that I play. So, if I can unplug my cable/connection and turn of the Spyware/Firewall software and play the single-player campaign in a standalone mode I would be happy.

I'm planning on picking it up after work tonight; hopefully my experience is a little better.

I almost never play games online and I'd hate to have to always be connected while I'm playing.

Anyone know about Valve supposedly hiring Bram Cohen(creator of BitTorrent) to add P2P ability in Steam so they can lower their server demand?
there used to be something here, but not anymore

I have not heard about it, but it would make sense...the irony is I know that the HL2 source code was distributed via bittorrent

The HL2 source was distributed in a ton of different ways; I got it without BT.

Hopefully that rumor's true, though - BT's a great program, but there's some room for improvement. Hopefully if it gets more widespread we'll see better clients.

Yeah, the installation process took forever. HL2 runs much smoother than Doom3 for me.
