    Weird

As some of you might know, I just got Windows XP Professional Edition, and so far, I've had three problems, can anybody who uses XP help me?

    1. I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 PRO 32 Mb AGP 4X, this has TV capabilities, but the TV software was part of the video card's drivers, and I can't install them. With all these new Multimedia Applications that XP has, can't I watch TV with some built-in app in XP?

    2. I have a Sound Blaster PCI 128 connected to a good set of Sony speakers, but if the volume is mildly high, I start getting a lot of weird noises. After doing some observations, I found out that these noises come out when I move the mouse, or when I'm typing on my keyboard, or even when the computer's accesing the hard drive!, do you know how can I fix this?

    3. My Start Bar (you know, the blue one at the bottom of the screen) is now 2 lines wide, I unlock the bar and try to resize it, but I can only get it to be 2 lines wide or 0 lines wide, I just want it 1 line wide. I can do this, but only when I disable my Quick Launch bar, I need my QL bar and 1 line wide, I know this is spossible because it was fine 5 minutes ago!, does someone knows hot to repair it?

hmm....sometimes I have that noise problem with my computer (and it runs ME) sometimes when I move my mouse or something, yes, even accessing the HD, I get weird beeping/clicking (sorta a combo) noises out of the system speaker. It's normally when it's sort of busy, though. I first noticed it when I installed some software or another over again (it was either when I reinstalled ME, got my new mouse, soemthing like that)

    Oh well, not too annoying.

Oh, and I don't have to worry about my volume being hig on ME, cuz my speakers don't work with it

I also had it when I had Win98SE, but it wasn't as loud as it is now! I get a different noise for each different "thing" that happens, don't you know how to fix it?

It sounds like you have a conflict somewhere within your system. The only times I get clicking on mouse moves and HD access is usually after some program/game has crashed. There must be a driver somewhere that is conflicting with either another driver, VxD, DLL, or something. But, I don't know XP very well so I'm just guessing from Win 9x.

Check your device manager and make sure that you do not have any conflicts. Video would be the first place I would look. View the device list as well as the IO,interrupt, and DMA list.

Did this start to happen after you installed a certain product, driver, game, compiler, etc? If it did, then you can blame that product. If it is just since installing XP, it may be that your video driver is not compatible with XP, since it is relatively new. Check your video card vendor's website for XP drivers. I'm not sure that 9x drivers will work.

If the sounds you are hearing are coming from the speakers, not the PC speaker, then you are probably just hearing the system work. If you turn your speakers way up, you will get some interference from the system on your speakers. This also happens on the telephone. But clicking in the PC speaker when you move the mouse or access the HD absolutely should not happen and shows that there is a problem somewhere.

Hey Osk, I have Win98SE, as you did, and I'm thinking about an upgrade to XP. What do you say? Is it worth, does it really improve the system (aprat from these problems you're having)?

Do you know if there's any problem with old Outlook files, DOS software or any thing?

Sorry I can't help with your problems, and good luck!

well, maybe it's Office 2000 of Visual Studio 6, but I'm not sure

Gades: apart from the 5 hours install, it's rather nice, but I've heard that if you use it on a slow computer you won't get anything good from it. I say you try it and tell us how you do.

Just a follow up on what Bubba said about IRQ conflicts...
Generally, the PCI slot that's right beside your AGP slot share the same IRQ. I keep that PCI slot clear and haven't had any problems (SBLive! + GeForce2 + Win2Kpro). Also, I beleive the legacy ISA slot (if you have one) and the 2nd PCI up from it generally share an IRQ, but I don't have any ISA expansion boards.
Try moving the sound card to another slot, get the newest drivers. If that doesn't work look for possible sources of electrical noise, wire routing etc...
    Hope I've helped (someone) today

Actually, the sound card comes built-into the main board, but I found what was causing the problem: the video card has an "Audio out" connector used to connect to the sound card in order to hear the sound coming from the TV tuner, I disconnected it and the noise stopped, but I want to watch TV with sound... what makes us go to problem #1, I can't watch TV at all because I haven't found the proper software!

ATI released XP drivers for all of their products. check ATI.com > Support > downloads
They should have your card with the proper drivers.

Ok I'll try it, but I have no problems with the drivers, you see, The ATI CD comes with all the software I want (TV, DVD, VIDEO CD), but XP doesn't support it. When I had Win2000 I had to download these new drivers, but they didn't come with the TV software.

Does someone knows a good TV program (application) for Windows XP (or that at least supports it)?

I'll try it, but with my connection, I don't think I will be able to go far (a 14400 bps connection)

    Thanks man!

You can also try muting unused sound parameters like 'line' and 'mic' and others.

That happened to me once when I ran a specific type of video software. I moved the mouse and got a hummm. By lowering the volume of the 'line in', the sound stopped and never gave me a problem again.

    Strange... huh.
