    Question Windows 'Hardwired Fonts'?

I read the following in an article on The Register:

"In two years' time much higher pixel densities will make Windows XP's hardwired fonts hard to read, and a modern GUI was considered a necessity..."

What does this mean, 'hardwired fonts'? Are there any particular fonts I should avoid using in applications?
