It finally came through last nite... it popped up and said it was available... and didn't even give me the option to remind me later, so I just cancelled it for now. I don't think I'm ready to take the plunge. My system is working great right now and I'd rather not screw it up before I have the chance to do some really good backups.

Microsoft has been running betas of SP2 for nearly a year now... it's more than ready for people to use.
I've used the pre-RC1 beta of SP2, and all proceeding versions to date... and have never had any problems with it. (except for some aesthetic stuff in the early stages)

that somebody happend to be microsoft, and they had an extensive list of software that would possibly break if you installed. SP2
personally i dont have to worry (win 98, w00t) but ive heard mixed opinons about SP2, some people claiming it buggers their PC and doesnt make it any more secure and some peopel who are loving it. but taking microsofts track record, i'd use it with caution

I downloaded, burned a CD of, and integrated SP2 in a new WinXP CD. The service pack has been around for at least two to three weeks.
The winsupersite (http://www.winsupersite.com/) gives a decent review of it.
I personally found it worth getting for a few reasons. 1) It includes all of the security updates, 2) It replaces the Internet Connection Firewall with a much more powerful firewall that also blocks outgoing connections and protects during bootup (great for those of us with highspeed connections), 3) I had access to a very fast connection so I didn't have to keep the connection going for two or three days (it's 250mb in size).
Edit: I forgot to mention one thing. In the near future Microsoft will be offering CDs of SP2. Not only will the CD be free but so will the shipping and handling. Obviously it benefits them to do this in the long run as viruses that hurt them won't be spread as much after the update. The CD will most likely be transported by USPS so it could take some time to arrive.
And no I don't work for Microsoft.

I've been running SP2 for about 1 week now and have not had any problems. You can turn off auto updates, antivirus assistant, and the firewall if you wish. So far, all programs have ran OK (no different from before anyways). The only thing noticeably in-your-face different is the fact that every once in a while it will ask you if you'd like to Block or Unblock a program. Also, IE has a built-in pop-up blocker.. That's about it... Get it.. You can always uninstall it later
....uninstall a service pack? I didn't think that was possible.....you'd have to reinstall an old version of the OS wouldn't you? Or maybe I'm just crazy
SP2 is listed in Add/Remove Programs, actually. You can remove it that way.

I really don't see why there are so many people so excited about SP2...it's not going to make your PC 10 times better. It's still going to be a sluggish WinXP box. It looks like a lot of the updates it makes won't even matter: a built in firewall? I've got ZoneAlarm. a popup blocker for IE? hahaha, Firefox is the best. I'm going to wait until I actually hear some reasons to install SP2 on my computer to install it.
