Hi There,
Anyone know where I can find any recent statistics for typical screen resolution settings?
I'm look for what percentage of users use 800x600, 1024 x 768 etc...
I put a poll on a non-programming discussion board recently and was surprised to find nearly half of the people who voted where using 800x600.

800x600 became the standard mainly because of Windows XP having it as it's minimum resolution.

I'd personally would use a higher resolution if my monitor supported it. Alias it as an older monitor and doesn't :(
mine would go higher on the pc's end, but like u said my monitor is as high as it will go without lines and smoke and crap.
I run all my games at 800x600 tho
I use 1024x768 on my laptop since thats the max. I think thats the minimun for a good computing experience.
I use 1400x1100 or something like that (between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200) on my desktop. Its a 20 inch monitor so its cool.
i used to run at 800x600 for a long time, then i switched to 1024x768 an learned what i was missing
i still run games at 800x600 or even 640x480 sometimes though

People don't use higher resolutions because of different reasons:
a) People don't know what it is and how to change it
b) People don't like their Icons and letters getting so small ( and never use a computer in a way that requires more than one window )

Of those who actually know what it is and how you change it, I don't know anyone below 1280x1024. Everything else is either outdated or otherwise uncompatible hardware ( i.e. notebooks ) or outdated people.
I use 832 x 624 , it's the highest my screen can go :(
This thread is awesome because it reminded me to change my resolution to 1280x1024. I had never gone higher than 1152x864 because I never noticed that my monitor had other resolutions beyond wonky ones like 1280x920 (I mean really, who the hell invented THAT resolution?).
Only @60Hz, though. Damned monitor :(
i use 1024 x 768 and thats the max my laptop supports... :(:(
My laptop's native resolution is 1680x1050x32. 60 Hz is the screen refresh rate. The video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32 megabytes of RAM.

Web developers be aware: Many users still have only 800x600 display screens.
Ya'll are crazy I can't read the fonts after 1024x768. That is what I run on.
i have that on my laptop and 800x600 on my desktop. if i try putting it any higher on my desktop, the screen goes nuts :( oh well, someday i'll get a better on :)Quote:

I run at 800x600 because everything seems really small after that, and I don't have much reason to run at any higher resolution. Except when my icons overflow my desktop...
And how can anyone run at lower that 640x480!
Probably cell phones, PDAs, TVs, and other small devices.

Personally, I use 1600x1200, but I do have a 21" monitor. I have a friend who also uses 1600x1200, but with a 15" monitor. He openly admits that he can't read half of what's on the screen :)

Normally I use 1280x1024, but my laptop, which I regularly use, maxes at 800x600.
It's a '98 PII :P

2048x1536@75hz :-) I'm pretty sure thats the max my graphics card will do. I love this montior though. Means I can fit lots of code and design specs and emails on the screen simultaniously which makes my life so much easier, even if it is a teeny bit hard to read sometimes.
1936x1600 @ 92 hz is what the max of mine is, although its all distorted :(
1024x768. My tv-out restricts me. I wish I could use something higher so I could have both going at the same time but when I try and run a higher resolution the picture gets cropped on my TV because it's too large and goes off the screen.
Nvoigt must really think he's silly. Now the swear filter is hilarious. :D

If your monitor isn't bigger than a 15", yes.
I use 1400 x 1024 (that's the highest) on my laptop (15 inch monitor) with 65Hz :( . It looks really bad if I use any settings lower than that.
Same here. I wanted to go even higher, but my monitor didn't support it. My dad got me a new 17" monitor that goes up to 1280x1024, which I am currently running at. I'm happy :)Quote:
