I think bush (unfortanately) has a good chance at winning this election... mostly because too many americans think they're better than everybody else and don't vote with their minds... bush being against gay marriage will definately win him alot of votes, even though in an 'enlightened' and 'civil' society, we would be educated enough to know homosexuality is a natural occurance and people wouldn't be judged depending on what they do in their personal lives...

I think a lot of it has to do with people just not paying attention to what's going on. One of my sister's friends said she was going to vote Bush because "at least we're not getting bombed."

Everyone remembers the last time we got bombed, right? Pearl Harbor, which was a mere 63 years ago. Also, FDR was president then, and you know what party he was? That's right a democrat. If a democrat is elected, the Japanese will bomb us again.

It actually seems this particular topic would hurt bush, because the majority of americans are against gay marriage, but the people that support amending the constitution are in the minority. kerry is against gay marriage, but he believes that each state should decide for itself, which actually seems to be the more popular opinion.

This is just what I've read

Polls that I've seen seem to indicate a lot of the people who are against gay marriage are also for a constitutional amendment. Not all, but a lot.

[OPINION] Which also shows two things. One, how so many people are so goddam desperate to cling to the party line that they don't think before amending the most important document in our government. Secondly, it shows the extreme level of homophobia that still exists in this country for no good reason[/OPINION]

edit: Also, Bush's stance on gay marriage won't win him any votes. The people that are for the amendment were already going to vote for him in the first place. He knows that, and his strategists know that. It takes focus off the economy and Iraq, just like axon said above.

Many of you know my stance on Bush from previous threads and FD...a couple of months ago I was a "Bush Fan"...recently this changed a bit. I don't think he is a good President, and I am afraid of the fact that if he DOES get reelected he will have a free hand to do whatever he wants since he doesn't have to appeal to the public since it is his second term.

This puts me in a conundrum since I don't want to vote Democrat, as I don't believe in most of their stances. The only candidate left is Nader, a libertarian. Sure I would vote for him, but it’s like throwing my vote away.

I really don't know what to do...

Nader's not a libertarian. He's running as an independant and his policital stances are about as far from libertarian as you can get without being outright socialist. Gary Nolan is the likely LP candidate.

Comes down to who you want out of office worse, Bush or Kerry. I don't particularly like Kerry, either, but he's pretty close to the middle, which hopefully make him appeal to swing voters better.

I don't follow any party lines at all... I'm not registered in any party (indie) and I don't pay attention to who's in what party and that party's ethics... I care more about the individual... there's no one party that fits my style... out of all of them, the green party probably comes the closest, and some of what they do I don't like either...

actually, it is a pretty stupid opinion, he used that to evade really talking about a constitutional amendmant as he knows full well that federal law supercedes state law, be it pro-gay or anti-gay in this case. At the end of this case, there will be either a constitutional ammendmant affirming gay rights or taking them away.

now as to who I think will win : Kerry. The reason is that he even being a gold digger/hypocrite/etc. for the whole divorcing his wife to marry a trophy rich one, is that he resonates more with the common man than bush could hope to. Regardless of what the republicans say, religion is NOT that important to most people, as most people have realized that religion is a personal relationship with ones diety, not some public affair that Bush makes it.

Why? All the courts need to do is look at the DOMA and declare is unconstitutional (which it is, blatantly), and let the states decide whether or not to do it.

    > he resonates more with the common man than bush could hope to.

I seriously doubt that, and I'd love for you to show me any way that that's true.

I should of included sarcasm with that part of my post, as honestly, a person who divorces his wife for money is worse than a person who was born in it.

now this I am serious about. I live in the deep south(Arkansas) and most people are more concerned with who will give them more welfare and benefits to medicine over their religious based personal/political goals. You may be right to a certain extent, but Bush is pretty much on the "God bless america...and noone else" platform with his recent ads, and his cowboyish ways, which alot people dont care for.

Living in the south, I guess you've got a better perspective than me on it, but it certainly seems like a lot of people are backing Bush because of the cowboyish attitude and "america first" stuff. They certainly were between 9/11 and a few months ago, anyway.

well, remember, the german people supported hitler in the beginning when everything sounded great... bad analogy(as is any analogy equating people to hitler), but along the same lines. People are finally seeing the real light about things. For example, most of the southern states are in the high 40's in the ranking of states for education, which is why I am glad I was homeschooled for most of my K-12 years(however, we are the minority in terms of homeschooled kids, i.e. we were actually doing it for improvement of education as my dad is an MD and my mom has a bachelors in linguistics, not for any religious reason). People in the south are tired of getting flimsy deals, most notably the bush tax cuts.

it all depends on peoples location in life, as the conservatives most often outspoken in polls and the public are those who are from well to do families, who heark to the good 'ole days of slave tradin'.

im really sick of political discussions for right now. i was at lunch listening to some people having a political argument, and i just started laughing because it was getting absurd (really!?) and one of the guys turned to me and said "what are you laughing at? it's not my fault you don't understand what we're talking about"

I nearly lost it right there, but then I remembered I don't care enough
