    Choosing A Scanner

I'm going to be buying a scanner and using it to scan in a bunch of old pictures. I want the scans to be of pretty good quality and keep/distribute them. With price a major concern, what resolution, etc. do you suggest.

Dell is offering these. I'm looking at number 3. Any comments?

(To the f'diddeans, yes this is a double post)

I've got one like that (older version). Good scanner, good choice. I've done some slide shows for my brothers' weddings and then my sister's, and the pictures came out looking great with a resolution ofonly 300 dpi. If you're going to be archiving photos to "replace" the hard copies, you'll probably want 500dpi or something, but that's too big if you're emailing a few quick shots to your friends - 200 dpi is plenty for that purpose. I usually use a little less.

Never heard of them, so wary. I bought a CanonScan 5000F just under a year ago, lovely piece of kit. Needed a new printer and was so pleased with the Canon scanner, dumped HP in favour of a Canon i560, also a lovely piece of kit.
