    Lotr 3

    Ok, I just finished watching the third part. I read the book before-hand, so of course I'm a little disappointed.

    The first two movies followed the book closely for the most part, with exceptions because of length/incongruency. This movie was 3hr and 30min. around. But damn, some of the best parts of the story were left out and/or changed. For no reason too. Would have taken only a few min of dialog to explain some things.

    It doesn't keep the tension up as much as the books do. And why does Frodo do nothing except get stabbed in all the movies? WTF? His character is uber-weak in the movies. But OMFG. Some of the passages in the book made the hair on my neck jump out, and I was hoping for that in the movie, but they were omitted for some reason.

    ++++TINY SPOLIERS++++
    WTF!
    -When gandalf is in minas tirith, they hardly show his doubt, which made the book more exciting.

    -Denethor is hardly a character. They don't even show him using one of the palantir, but they show peregrin(or was it merry?) looking into saruman's palantir and overcome with fear.

    -After the siege of gondor, everyone just assumes Aragorn is king, which is hard to explain right now, but that's not how it was in the book. He doesn't even have to heal peregrin(merry?), eowen, or faramir, which was a little bummer. Of course main characters survive... but faramir wasn't even shown as a big character in the movies, his death could've been possible.

    -Lord of the nazgul(I forget his name); his entrance sucks. He was the first to pass through the walls of minas tirith (whose walls had never been broken, or allowed enemies within, which wasn't displayed) and had a short speech with gandalf. A rooster crows at the end of their speech and halts the fighting temporarily because of sunlight, but it was a horn in the movie, and it didn't stop the fighting, it only meant rohan had come. This of course didn't happen, which was disappointing. The enemey's greatest weapon hardly has a part.

    -The reason for marching all men to the black gates was not explained, except for as a distraction. Which is true, but they don't explain that the sauron would have to believe that they had the ring, and keep the lidless eye focused on them. All in all, the ring's power wasn't emphasized as much in the books. The eye never spots frodo for this reason.

    -Samwise just walks right in to cirith ungol (or, what was that tower that wasn't explained to be the second tower in the second movie?). In the book he is halted by guardians.
    +++++++++

    Also, going back to the first movie, I think it ruined all of them when they first explained the ring's power. The best part about reading the first book was the beginning mystery about it.

    Gollum was the best character in the movie. His portrayal stays truest to the book.

    Flame, flame, flame....

    Read the book, or for those of you who have read the book, watch the movie. Tell me what you think. Of course I know making it a movie was hard, but, the book came out in the 1950's (right?), so why not take the time to write a better screenplay. I mean, it's not like the harry potter craze, that they have to make the movies while the books are still hot.

    I disagree with you here. Personally, I don't see Harry Potter as just another fad, like Pokemon or whatever. I see it becoming classic literature eventually. I've liked the Harry Potter books since 1998, and my interest hasn't remotely wavered yet. I'm sure it depends on the person, but either way...they are great books.

    As to the LotR movie, I'll see it over Christmas break, I haven't the time or energy to sit through a 3 1/2 hour movie.

    I saw it tonight. It was ..........ing incredible.

    I haven't read the books in years, and don't remember them, and frankly, don't really care about the differences.

    Take the movies as seperate pieces of art than the books. If there are differences, tough. These movies are some of the finest pieces of filmmaking in years.

    The elephant scene rocked; but I think they should've trimmed a lot more off the end of the book.

    Yeah; I think the end dragged pretty bad. I was kinda miffed going in the the scouring wasn't in, but in retrospect, that would've made the movie like an hour longer.

    Umm, no.

    The only gay geeks are the ones who militantly defent their position about a movie/comic/cartoon/pulp magazine, or like other men.

    I thought the movie was perfect.

    If they followed the book closely it would have been 10 hours long and would be sooo boring.

    Movies are A LOT different than books, what works and sounds good in books will sometimes turn to utter crap on the movie screen.

    These movies are all perfect, they had to take shortcuts to save time.

    Also the extended editions have always added needed missing parts so I am sure that will add some missed things.

    I loved the movie, every bit of it.

    It is a definate must see for EVERYONE.

    Also, add spaces under the spoiler alert so peoples eyes don't wander and see it, almost pointless to add the alert with the stuff right there.

    I know he has another name, I like using their "tongue" names.

    Anyways. The movie was disappointing, but I've come to a more satisfactory conclusion. Great movie, but the screen play needed a little work. The only big thing that bothered me was Frodo. Elija Wood, pfft. Some of it wasn't his fault though. He really only had two facial expressions during the movies; a queer smile and a pained look. I still think he sucked as a character in the movies. Seriously though, he doesn't do much except get stabbed. His best acting was at the end of the movie in Mount Doom. Other than that, he's just a confused hobbit throughout the movies. I forgot to mention that yes, I will be waiting to get the extended version for missed parts, because I know there are more explanatory parts in it. But I can't really think of other stuff. The stuff that kinda ........ed me off was just changed. I swear in the beginning of the movie, or close to, they had a shot of (I forget his name too) the Mouth of Sauron talking to sauron. He said like one word. So why didn't he greet aragorn and etc.? The things that diappointed me wouldn't have been time-consuming add-ons, but just the fact that they changed some stuff. The only reason I see why they chose to go straight to battle at the black gates instead of speaking with Mouth of Sauron, is because they figured audience would rather watch the fighting. There is a tremendous amount of battle earlier, along with hope-raising speeches, but they decided to add another.

    I also thought it was weird the way they had so many fadeouts near the end. Other ppl started to leave, and it started it again. It did go on for a while. The end was cheezy.

    A few massages that weren't in the movie that I would have loved to see:

    ::Pippin searches for Gandalf at the beginning of the battle::
    "...Pippin turned a corner opening on the wide place behind the City Gate. He stopped dead. He had found Gandalf; but he shrank back, cowering into a shadow"

    ::When Gandalf goes to meet the gates being battered by Grond::
    "In rode the Lord of the Nazgul, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.

    All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax[...].

    'You cannot enter here,' said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. 'Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your Master. Go!'

    The Black Rider flung, back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was set. The red fires shone between it and the mandlted shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter.

    'Old fool!' he said. 'Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!' And with that he lifted high his sowrd and flames ran down the blade.

    Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

    And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. [Arrival of Rohan]."

    I hear Kill Bill is an excellent movie, can't wait to see it.

    I was browsing through the book more. OMFG this dude was crazy. Hard to tell if Middle-Earth ever even existed.

    ::Taken from Apendices F::
    [i]"It was said that the Black Speech was devised by Sauron in the Dark Years, and that he had desired to make it the language of all those that served him, but he failed in that purpose. From the Black Speech, however, were derived many of the words that were in the Third Age wide-spread among the Orcs, such as 'ghash' for 'fire' , but after the first overthrow of Sauron this language in its ancient from was forgotten by all but the Nazgul. When Sauron rose again, it became once more the language of the Barad-dur and of the captains of Mordor. The inscription on the Ring was in the ancient Black Speech, while the curse of the Mordor-orc in II, 48, was in the more debased form used by the soldiers of the Dark Tower, of whom Grishnakh was the captain. 'Sharku' in that tongue means 'old man'."

    Damn
