    stupid school assignment

i need some of you to do my homework for me

I need to ask a few people about their programming jobs for a school assignment, and I figure this is a good place to do it, because, well, it's a programming forum... so here goes:

    1) what is your salary/pay like?
    2) what do you like about your job?
    3) what do you dislike about your job?
    4) what company do you work for?
    5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?
    6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?

that's about all I can think of for now... that should probably be good... it's just some stupid freshman class that wants to help us get our lives together...

thanks in advance for any help...

    Hope this helps

    >>1) what is your salary/pay like?

53K last year, base salary of 47K plus work incentive bonuses. Full health, dental, vision, prescription drug, business travel accident, and life insurance. 401(K) profit sharing plan. Discounted stock purchase, discounted product purchase, tuition reimbursement. On site health and fitness centers, sports and recreation teams, and child care. I will get full stock options next year.

    >>2) what do you like about your job?

I work in a position in a company that allows me to be creative and innovative. Also, when I am home I am able to telecommute quite a bit. (Like today for example )

    >>3) what do you dislike about your job?

Travel. I average around 10 days a month on the road. Sometimes more and sometimes less.

    >>4) what company do you work for?

I work for a Fortune 500 company with global operations on several continents. Our main focus is communications technology.

I wouldn't mind telling you the name of the company, but due to an incident concerning an employee from my particular office late last year I prefer not to do so.

We are probably most well known to the general public for our cellular phone technology.

    >>5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?

1 week vacation (increased in 2004), 3 sick/personal days, holidays, all paid.

    >>6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?

Which one? I have many. I assume you mean my most direct supervisor, he is a nice guy and we go to lunch together and play racquetball a lot, and No! I am not afraid to beat him!

I'm liking where this thread is heading.

    1) what is your salary/pay like?

I'm a programmer, but also an enginner. I won't disclose my salary, but let's just say I get paid around what a Software Engineer I should get paid on Salary.com

    2) what do you like about your job?

I have freedom to choose my own projects and I work with a diverse range of engineering topics. I can choose my own career path, basically. My company is owned by 2 companies overseas. I've been here 5 weeks and I'm already scheduled to go to France for the company. I also have trips lined up to Michigan and Florida.

    3) what do you dislike about your job?

I work in an industrial plant. It's dirty. I have to dress as tho I'm working in an office environment. I've only been here 5 weeks and people don't give me enough details about projects because they assume I know the IT architecture.

    4) what company do you work for?

www.macktrucks.com (aka Volvo) I work in the powertrain division. We do a lot of design here and I support the software that runs the tests in our laboratory (32 test cells running diesel truck engines 24/7/365) A large portion of my plant also handles the assembly of the Mack engines.

    5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?

2 weeks/year, paid holidays (aka including christmas through new years), several sick days (not sure how many)

    6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?

Laid back. Very easy going. I don't see him much because his office is not in the same area as mine, but he is very concerned that I'm comfortable and that my initiation is going well here. He's also new to my group as a manager, and is finding his roots as I am. So we're kinda in the same boat. Heh.

Whats all this '2 weeks/year plus hols' malarkey?

So...do you only get 2 weeks annual leave? Or are the people in US meaning they get 2 'free' weeks + 4 weeks or so hols?

In UK I get 5 weeks hols, the norm is 4 until you have been employed for a loooong time. Plus we get no other 'weeks' off for 'free'!

    Explain! (please)
    Such is life.

    >>1) what is your salary/pay like?
$27/hour. $10000 in cash bonuses last year (they increase each year) + 15% of annual gross income into a SEP-IRA account.

    >>2) what do you like about your job?
What don't I like about my job? I get to program. It is the most fun job in the world. It's hardly like work at all. You get to use all kinds of creativity and what I like most is that I can create something out of nothing with my own two hands that is used by many other people. That is probably what is most intriguing to me about programming.
When I'm done with a project and have nothing else to work on, I sit on this board and work on personal programming projects.
The bonuses and pay increases (sometimes more than once a year).

    >>3) what do you dislike about your job?
Nothing much, but I could stand to be paid more (although I don't even have a degree yet, so asking for more would be pushing it). I do hope of course that he will give me another huge pay increase after I actually earn my degree.

    >>4) what company do you work for?
A company that does revenue accounting for airlines. As you can imagine we were hit terribly hard by 9/11. We lost 4 airlines and 2/3 of our employees after that.

    >>5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?
2 weeks a year + birthday and holidays.

    >>6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?
Great. I actually work directly with the owner of the company and he has great trust in my work and is very friendly and intelligent. He's a great man to learn great things from.

    Re: stupid school assignment

    1) what is your salary/pay like?
a payslip with some amount in it which really ashames me now that I saw others' figures !

    2) what do you like about your job?
it pays me enough so that I'm ready to buy my own brand new car now !

    3) what do you dislike about your job?
I really hate the monotony in my work. Day in and day out we have to work on the same set of programs But that's life !

    4) what company do you work for?
I work for an insurance company in the IT dept. If I disclose the name, the HR folks will easily fish me out. So I'll skip that part.

    5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?
1 week per year + holidays

    6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?
She is an absolute mess. At times I think how can one be a project manager with a wont-take-any-ownership kind of attitude. I have worked with quite a few managers and all of them were great but the current one just sucks. Often makes me think do we really need such a person at that position whose only job is to send about 10 odd mails per day ! sorry for the rant but the very thought of my boss spoils the day for me.

OK, this is how it works in the US. Usually you get a certain amount of "vacation" time. For instance, I have 2 weeks of paid vacation that I can take whenever I want, in any amount that I want. If I want a 3 day weekend, I can use one of the days, and then I have 9 left until the next year. If I want to take a whole week off (5 business days), I can do that, and then I have one week left for the rest of the year, and so on... All of that time that I take off is paid as tho I was at the office.

Also, all the major holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, etc) are days where I don't have to come to work and I'm paid for it as tho I was there.

Usually if you're with a company for several years, they increase the number of days that you're allowed to take off.

And therefore, yes, you all get more vacation time/year than we do. You lazy, lazy bastards.

edit: I hope that explained it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure he was confused about that because I believe they refer to vacation as holiday over there.

Like Ober said your vacation time usually increases with your time with the company. For example, I got one week my first year, 2 weeks in my second year etc. It will cap off eventually though.

1 - I would rather not say openly in the forum, email me and I'll tell you.
2 - C++, and I have not had to travel.
3 - The people I work for are dinosaurs. Their philosophy is don't change anything.
4 - email me for this one too. (by the way, I hope to change this answer within the next week or two)
5 - two weeks plus holidays

You were barking up the right tree. It's the same deal in the UK with regards to getting a set number of days off per year that you can spend how you like. As Fountain said, it usually starts at 20 days per year. Likewise, in addition, you get all of the public holidays (xmas etc).

    1) what is your salary/pay like?

The average salary ( not saying if I get more or less *g* ) for my job in Germany is 45K ( maybe around 50K $ ). Please note that this is not comparable 1:1 to a US salary as various other things may differ. For example I know people in the US who pay half the rent for an apartment they share. Their 'half' is smaller then my whole appartment I have for me alone, yet half the rent is double my full rent. Comparing numbers 1:1 won't do it for salaries.

    2) what do you like about your job?

Programming. Learning new things like C#. I do for a living what I like to do and that's great. It's not as good as programming at home, but then it's better than any other job.

    3) what do you dislike about your job?

Some people are unreliable. Only a few, but obviously I cannot change anything about it as easy as I could in private. Deadlines are always close by, information always scarce... but I guess that's normal *g*

    4) what company do you work for?

A medium sized business in Germany. Even Germans don't recognize the name.

    5) how many vacation days (if any) do you get?

In Germany, we get vacation days that we can use as we like. We have about 10 national holidays that are not neccessarily on weekends ( christmas, easter, reunion day, labor day... ). If we call in sick, we need to see a doctor immediatly and get an allowance for absence at work. That days are not subtracted from any of the days above.

I have 25 days of vacation I may use as I like. 24 is the legal minimum, so 25 is nothing to be enthusiastic about.

    6) what is your boss/manager/etc. like?

It's a techie as well, which makes communication much easier.
