that reply goes very far from answering the question...

virtual reality... what ever happened to that? that was supposed to be the next big thing in the, what was it, early 90s?
I came up with a cool phrase to put down here, but i forgot it...

I talked to a professor that got his education soley around game design and virtual reality(PHD). Apparantly, the technology cost out weight production possibilities at the time. There was no way to release vr equipment to the general populus at an affordable price. Pretty much was the end of VR. Which pretty much made his degree useless.

How ever, he was talking that with the latest surge of technology achievements that VR may be remerging some time soon.

virtual relaity has been around since the 90s yeh just if you were to market such systems then you have to keep in mind your starting a whole new thing its not like going from playstation to playstation2. its people having to decide and see if virtual realiy games are actualy as fun. where ive tried them at certain arcade-type places they have those 5 minute 3d virtual reality things. i didnt find them fun first of alll stanidng up to play is a killer. but probally if i had more time to play it i woulda gotten used to the control and liked it better.

I do think VR will re-emerge soon.

The game industry has to go somewhere.

The Real-Time-Strategy market got overcrowded about one or two years back...so those games are dropping out.

The First-Person-Shooter market is getting very overcrowded as we speak. There are still some hits coming out for it, however, such as Doom 3 and the next Unreal game. So it is not completely overcrowded yet, but it will arrive there soon.

Those are the two main markets right now. Once they are both overcrowded, the game industry has to move to a new market.

    What will they move to?

I doubt they will go back to side-scrolling games (although I know we all loved those games for the NES and SNES).

They will want to expand to larger bounds and greater lengths.

I bet some of that will include VR.

i think the MMO market will be the next surge of games... not solely the MMORPGs, but i believe soon we will see more MMOFPS (planetside? bf1942?), and we may even start seeing MMORTSs (ive tried to think of ways of making it feasable, but im sure someone will figure it out. There was an attempt at one called mankind a few years back, but i heard it sucked hard).

also, i think hybrid games will be more popular in the next few years. combination FPS-RPG or FPS-RTS or RTS-RPG... there have already been a few, and i think those genres will expand as the pure games become less common.

    >i think hybrid games will be more popular in the next few years

I have actually been thinking about that a lot. I know hybrid games have been tried in the past, but have not been successfull, probably just because the time was not right.

I designed a hybrid game a couple years ago (but i never programmed it of course). Once I get older and have the experience I would love to develop it...maybe someday...

More then likely, VR will make a major emergence in the MMORPG field. Its most logical. Its a market that consists soley on the idea of pretending to be some one your not in some sort of a fantasy situation. The ultimate mmorpg will be one designed for virtual reality.(.hack sign any one?)

Anyone seen those flight simulators for training pilots? I was watching the history channel and the guy got to try it out. It has a 360 degree view and the terrain was mapped by satellite. Pretty darn close to the real thing! I'd say that if it were cost-effective, VR would be the big thing right now, but as it is I would say that hybrid games are going to be the next big thing. I'd love to see an MMORPFPSSG

    Deus Ex is a FPS/RPG.
Obviously you shoot stuff, and everything you do has a bearing on how people and the environment interact with you - its not just something like in d2 where the plot/chars/interaction is pretty much fixed. There was an article on diabloii.net somewhere which was exploring different RPG subgenres.
